Oople 2012 Vintage Cougar racer

Post by Headling »

I'm just going to start building up a Cougar 2 for National A finalist Nathan Ralls to drive

Here is a link to the event:

http://www.oople.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103300

I didnt get a entry to this but will have one of my cars raced so its all good!

I have my spare eBay car to build from but have this little coming tomorrow so should have enough to build a nice Cougar 2 racer

Image

What turn brushless motor can the gearbox handle? 13.5? 10.5?

Also any set up tips as this will be a race car?

As a side note I'll be using AE B4 shocks as have a nice set built up ready.
If in doubt go flat out!

Some of those bits look like they've just been dug up from a field

The works gearbox with slipper should be able to cope with just about anything within reason, maybe 7.5 :)

Yes I know! lol

The chassis and gearbox is the main bits I want from that pile of bits.

Oh a 7.5! that'll will be interesting, but maybe go for a safe 10.5 but add a bit of boost.

Its going to running lipo's, shall I run a strip of lead under the lipos??

Also what about weight on the front end??

Im going for a std B4 shock set up with silvers all round and 35,30wt oil on 2# pistons, shouldnt be too far out
If in doubt go flat out!

The Cougar2 works will be a very good car for this event. The only real issue is with the manual and the lack of mention to add cone/spring washers to the thrust race assembly. The standard 23mm alloy pro diff is a top unit in my opinion. You really need to get those washers onto the diff screw otherwise you'll face problems.
If you are missing any Cougar2 bits let me know and I might be able to get them to you.
Do you have a use for that CAT front bumper by any chance?

You definitely have your work cut out for you. I like the basket case builds. Breathing new life into cars that are headed for the trash heap gives me tremendous satisfaction.

Looking forward to the build.

Thanks for all the tips etc.

It has a slipper and from my other ebay Cougar (see other thread) I have alloy diff outdrives and a new diff bolt but I'll make sure to use new cone washers, lets hope I can make a strong reliable belt gearbox.

Yes Nathan is racing it in the Vintage race on the Friday of the invernational, lets hope we can pick up a trophy!

There are 2 x heats of the vintage cars and someone from oople is going to do a video of the races, its on clay at the new Robin Hood Raceway so nice to see the cars on a proper surface!

Not sure about the wing that came with this lot of bits, the last owner of it was Dave Holmes who used to race this car back in the day.

Good luck to Nathan!

Yes Nathan is a very quick driver so we stand a good chance!

Here are some pics from today:

Ball raced steering from my eBay car (see other thread) which is a bonus!

B4 shocks spaced out and fitted with Schumacher rod ends

Image

As this is a racer I want to bolt the servo down, any suggestions on where to put it??

Some pics of the other doner car, I got this from eBay a few months ago.

With the pile of Cougar 2 parts I'll make 1 good race car from the pair

Assuming you guys run the same tires and layout as the modern cars, I am REALLY llooking forward to comparing both categories times... this might shock a few folks that a C2 is only a couple of tenths slower than a modern thoroughbred...

ach - just thought about sthing - this is a rear-motor car, all the topdogs run mid-motors on UK astro tracks...

mmmh :?

Yes but this meeting is on clay so I am sure we will see quite a few guys go from the mid motor cars to the rear motor cars.

So yes lets hope it can do some good lap times!
