Front shock options for 1988 Yokomo YZ-10

Hi everyone -

I'm rebuilding the 1988 YZ-10 posted here: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=41529&p=469146#p469146

One of my front shocks has a busted center rod, so I think I need to replace it. But I can't find replacement Yokomo shocks anywhere I've looked, including eBay.

The very helpful user jwscab on this forum mentioned that Associated .56" shocks can be used as a replacement, but I can't find those, either!

Does anyone know what my options are for front shocks?

Thank you in advance!

.56 shocks are the front shock for older rc10 as well as the rereleased one. Associated offered them in gold, hard anodized(grey) and blue(hard to find).

The gold shocks you can find as well as the hard anodized ones usually as used sets or parts on eBay. Otherwise, with the rerelease, you should be able to find front gold ones at places like tower hobbies and amain hobbies.

Also, tc3, tc4, and couple others used the .56 shock bodies, but you need to change the shaft to .56, as they used .35 shafts in the touring cars.

Otherwise, you can use short buggy shocks from other vendors with some spacers and washers, etc.

its not out of ordinary to replace with associated shocks since in us thats what they offered. >56 like said is good. replaces stock length shocks. >71 a little longer was an option. 1.02 replaces stock length in rear but 1.32 will give you a longer shocks.

Ok, I'm starting to understand now. Above is the shock shafts section from the parts list. I actually only need the shaft for one of my shocks, that's it.

So you are saying that the 0.56 and 0.71, part numbers 6461 and 6460 are for the front shocks. Any idea which of those are stock (i.e. which ones I already have)?

More importantly, does anyone know where I might get new shafts (or something equivalent)?

Thank you!

unfortunately, no, your shocks are the original yokomo shocks. So the options list in that sheet are for associated replacements.

you could in theory replace the shock shaft with an associated one, but you would need to also change the spring retainer/cup on the bottom since the threads in the yokomo are metric and the associated parts are imperial thread.

another option would be to find some metric shock shafts that are similar in length and swap both front shafts, maybe from something like kyosho or hpi or schumacher(not sure if they are metric).

hmm...possibly new associated parts, as they went to metric on much of their offerings.

these would fit on the front of the buggy, buy you would need longer shock shafts.

https://www.amainhobbies.com/team-associated-threaded-shock-kit-2-tc3-ntc3-asc3985/p22809

otherwise, you can measure your old shaft, and see if something in this list looks close:

I forgot the yoke shaft has no threads at the bottom, so it's not critical if you have threads or not on the bottom.

Thank you for all of this information!

Do you think this set would work?

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSZC2

With these shafts?

Unfortunately neither is in stock, but is there any reason these would not work?

B44 front shocks are .89. they will physically attach to the car but the ride height and range will be off. They can work with a taller front tower.

Thanks for all of this information.

I ordered new front and rear RC10 Classic shocks, which altogether were not cheap! But these seem most appropriate for the model and should perform well.

I also got some Associated 30wt Silicone Shock fluid, which is the default fluid on the RC10 Classic.

The RC10 Classic shocks have a million different parts... I got the part numbers from Associated. In case anyone else might find these useful, here they are.

Front shocks (needed for two shocks):

Shock body 6449 x2
Shock caps 6450 x2
Rod ends 6468 x1
Shaft - 0.56" stroke - 6461 x2
Springs 1581 x1

Rear shocks:

Shock body 6446 x2
Shock cap 6450 x2
Rod ends 6468 x1
Shaft - 1.02" stroke - 6459 x2
Springs 1582 x1

Also needed in any case but enough parts for 4x shocks:

Pistons 6465 x1
Rebuild kit 6440 x1
Accessories kit 6451 x1

I installed these and they are excellent on my YZ-10:
