Here's a Yokomo Mini Racer RC-12: http://onceuponatime.sblo.jp/category/1170731-1.html

In 1982, AYK transmissions looked like the one on the Super Trail...though I guess preproduction examples of the Gator/Sidewinder might have been around too.

Yes, I´d say that AYK was heavily inspired buy the 834 transmission when they did their 4wd - Sprocket and chain size seems to be the same.

The Ayk Viper is very much a 4x4 Bobcat and the Bobcat leans heavily on the Scorpion transmition design , the chain was the first practical way of getting drive to the front but the Viper has a front gearbox with diff and the Dogfighter just a sprocket on an axle at the front not even a diff , the Ayk Viper is more like what Kyosho could have made instead of the Progress (for better or worse) .

Really wish there were better pictures of this early Doggy , it looks more like a top deck to me than rods , this looks very early in the design process and without a finalised rear transmition , the forward chain may simply be missing , you have to understand the design process as this could just be a test bed for testing the suspension and just have a jerry rigged gearbox just so it moved , the final transmition design might never have started with this system but not have been ready for suspension testing so they just threw together something to make it go .
It's a real shame we don't know more :(
With the motor placed centrally in front of the gearbox however nice for weight distribution it would be really hard to get a chain past it to the front unless it was way out to one side or over the top , could the Dogfighter originally be intended for rear wheel drive only ? Rear wheel drive was the norm and 4x4 was exotic and new ,then the pictured gearbox starts to make sense .

I'm going boss eyed now , maybe they are rods . There also seems to be some sort of housing behind the motor that could be an offset chain housing , between the brush end of the motor and the left trailing arm , looks like the canterlever is mounted on it .

The Viper chain and the 834b chain is the same size - It´s the only two 4wd off-road buggy´s I know of, using that chain. Looking at the sandwich construction of the Yokomo mule transmission in addition to the fact that it ended being 4wd makes me think that Ayk had their eyes on the 834 when they released the Viper and the Bobcat/Buffalo in 1985. Kyosho Progress (1984) was running bigger sprockets and a wider chain.

At that point in the mid 1980's 4x4 was the hot ticket ,other than the RC10 nearly everybody switched development to 4x4 , the Viper really was a direct development of the Bobcat with a throwback to the Sidewinder front suspension , probably spurred on by the Dogfighter but other than the pitch of the chain there's not that much in common .
There was no separate 2wd and 4wd classes in racing at the time ,only stock and modified classes , this gave any 4wd a huge advantage , it's how the antiquated by comparison Dogfighter beat the RC10 in the first world's championship !
Almost all 4wd cars were a reaction to the success of the Dogfighter with the possible exception of the Hirobo rock'n city that arrived within months of the Dogfighter .

Literally all Ayk did was extend the lay shaft of the Bobcat gearbox and put a sprocket on it to make the Viper gearbox , it's the same gearbox with an additional sprocket .

Sorry reading back I got a bit pedantic and off topic , I meant no offence .
