A&L Optima Mid

Post by uzzi »

Thought I share with you one of my stalled Kyosho projects :(

It started life as an original Optima Mid......I left it for nearly a year in its original state to do my CATs then chanced on this A&L kit. The guy that sold it to me also include the Litespeed Heatsink motor plate. There was also a set of uncut belt covers that has not been installed yet. It is by no means complete but I put it together to at least resemble a car rather than a box of parts.

Any ideas what would be a nice body to use on this car? I am not sure if the original LWB mid version would fit well.

Looks Awesome Chris!! What a cool conversion. Did anybody actually run one of these back in the day?

Wow, that looks really nice. I can't look at it too long or I'll want to build something similar.

I had that conversion on one of my mids. I didn't use the arms and the rear shock tower...which I still have somewhere. That was the first of many Optima Mids that I regret getting rid of. :(

The rear toe in was adjustable using 3 sets of different mounts.

Can't wait to see the finished product. I think any of the LWB optima bodies will fit, but you will need to modify the back portion where the arms are mounted.

For the body, you may want to try one of Brandon's ProX bodies. It looks like it has the correct overall shape...especially the rear arm mounts and rear shock tower.

which wheels are you using on this? did they require an adpater or different axle?

Thanks for the replies and support guys it will definately motivate me to complete her. Let me give a more detail blurb about the car as I wanted to quickly post pics of the car for another member here last night. Work has gotten the better of me for the last few weeks and I only gotten back home late yesterday. I never even knew this kit existed for the Mid even when I was racing a mid BITD. I think perhaps we did not see alot of them was due to a number of reasons. Off road tracks were starting to become groomed and smoother (perhaps no advantage to run the trailing link set up?). The rear supension is kinda fragile if you landed sideways off a jump. Adjustability, added cost and also the weight of these cars. However, I reckon the biggest factor was perhaps the introduction of the lwb mids from Kyosho themselves.

As for this car, my initial idea was to restore her back to original but when I got the car it looked way to worn to be worthwhile. Once I gotten the A&L kit I got on a second wind to do further. So slowy it has gotten to where she is today. As it were, I missed out on certain option parts on ebay which kind slowed thing down. The wheel are the biggest concern the front being modern day ZX5 and the rears are 2.2 Trinity if I am not mistaken. The rears actually rub on the trailing arms hence I had to space it out. You still can't run it as the wheel nut is barely holding on. The older wheels had alot of offset compare to the modern ones. I managed to get a set of wheel adapters to run Yokomo rims but that was also not a quick fix as proper Yoke rims are rare as hell too. Axles are as per Kyosho Option House UJs all round. The rear wheel hex is std A&L but it is really wide compare to the std Kyosho Hex.

The body was also another area that was not a smooth change over. The A&L mid have a narrow nose, very wide and forward side pods which flares out towards the back to accomodate the rear arms. Pro X body looks like a potential candidate so thanks for that. Here is a front view to give you an idea what I mean.

HPI cyber 10B should be a good fit, but you'll need a gear cover as it is very low in the rear. Tamiya gravel hound (plasma edge) is an easy alternative too

Does anybody know if the stock Optima Mid body will fit this conversion or how much modification it would take?
