“Blueprint” Scorpion!

Post by Hcp22 »

Sometimes you get some parts wrong…
When I stated that Bob Rodine’s Runner (Jack in the Box) was the buggy that have stand model for Kyosho designer Akira Kogawa when he designed the COX Scorpion. But that’s not true; it was another of Bob’s buggy’s that stood model for Akira Kogawa when he deigned the COX Scorpion.
It’s a short course buggy from UMP that Bob drove in -81. And when you look upon the picture you can clearly see that’s the right buggy!

So my “Blueprint Scorpion” is just a model of Bob Rodine’s Runner (Jack in the Box).

Hi

I had a taught that I wane try to build a Scorpion that look like the “blueprint” Scorpion!
I got the idea from Tobbe’s Blog Remote360 (http://remote360.blogspot.com/) when I read this!

“A few years ago I saw a picture online, an old ad, showing the Cox Scorpion (in the US. it was distributed by Cox and the only thing that differs from the Kyosho / Graupner-version are the decals, the box and that it was pre-assembled as far as I know). It said "Modeled after Bob Rodine´s buggy". I did some research and ended up at http://www.race-dezert.com where I got in contact with Mike Adams. He sent me these pictures from "Hot VW Magazine", showing Mr. Rodine´s buggy and You can tell that this 1:1 buggy inspired Akira Kogawa when he designed the Scorpion. Enjoy!”

My firs taught was to do a 1/10 scale replica, but I gave that idea up. It would probably take a few years to do. So I decided to do it as “production car”, at least something that could have been manufactured. So I have to use so many Kyosho parts a possible and handmade the rest!

This is Bob Rodine Buggy that inspired the Kyosho designer when made the Scorpion. But I have also discovered the other Kyosho car have there rots in this buggy, for example the Progress. In my opinion are the Progress more influenced of Bob’s buggy then the Scorpion.

And here is Bob Rodine posing with his Buggy.

Now I only needed a chassis to work with! I found a Kyosho Advance chassis without motor and body for 41$, and when I got it home to Sweden I discover the cassis where in remarkable good condition for 25 year old car!

Next step was to find some material for the roller cage and the motor guard. I found what I needed at the hardware store, 6mm aluminum rod and tube. I also purchase a hand held pipe bender (I don’t know if this is the right word).

Comments and taught are welcome!

Updates will follow… :D
Cheers

It’s easy to be carried away and start to fabricate custom parts. But that’s okay as long as I can’t find it as an existing Kyosho part I will try to use those instead of custom made parts.

The reason I chosen the Advance chassis is the gearbox. I want an electric mid mounted motor, and I think this is the easiest way to go. Just turn the counter gear forward, and for this you need a custom made motor plate…
My son provided me with the custom made motor plate; acutely it was 2 motor plates. He said “If
You screw up old man; you have one extra to get it right. Well, I spouse hi is right. :D

A new year is her, and I have some updates.

Well, my son wasn’t right… I manage to get it right the first time! And I have already started to plan for the second motor plate, and I think I know what I gone use it for…
I’m satisfied with outcome of the motor plate, it’s adjustable and sturdy! :D

I have finish the cage and gearbox guard. I made it out of 6mm aluminum pipe and rod. They are screwed together with M2 screws.
I have also started to make the nerf bars, but I did a mistake and run out of the 5mm aluminum rod I have chosen for nerf bars. But the supplier open’s up again on Monday after the holydays.

wow, that's a real nice job you've done. I would never 've imagined you could make such a tidy looking cage without welding.

What do you plan using for batterypack? With the moter in front of the rear shocktower you're either going to have to go lateral or with a hump-pack I guess?

My first thought was to weld it together, but I don’t have a hobby room where I can use an open flame. Otherwise is rather easy to weld/sold aluminum.

About the battery, I think I gone cheat and use a small LiPo S2. Another alternative is to place one C-sub cell on each side of the motor and 4 in front of the motor.

 Great job !! How did you bend the pipes? Have you heated it? Usually arise in aluminum cracks or breaks !
