Rebuilding and refilling red Kyosho shocks - How?

Post by EvolutionRevolution »

I'm trying to rebuild two red Kyosho shocks from an early Optima. They will be mounted to a CRP front suspension kit on a Tamiya Striker :D . However, after three tries at rebuilding them, I gave up because of two problems:

1) The o-ring seals are shot. The shocks leak terribly. Can I replace the o-rings by Tamiya o-rings, or did Kyosho use o-rings with different dimensions?
2) How far are you supposed to fill these things with oil? The first two times I tried I couldn't get the cap fully on (could not be screwed down), and the third time I had a shock that had zero rebound while the shock shaft could not slide further than halfway up the shock body...

Could someone please help and tell me how you are supposed to rebuild these things?

You will find new O-rings at CRP (http://www.teamcrp.net/).

Follow the instructions on the picture! :D

Does bleeding work in combination with the air cap in the kyosho gold shocks? if you put the bleedport in the wrong place it will just bleed air ;)

Or you could take the bladder out...

Back in the days, we drilled a tiny hole in the gold shocks top cap … that wasn’t such a god idea, when the buggy landed after a big jump four squirts came from the shocks when the air caps burst

I tried rebuilding some Kyosho red shocks that were originally installed on the Marui Galaxy I restored, and I must've had bad O-rings too, as they just leaked. I also found they were picky with the amount of oil needed; a little too much and they wouldn't compress.

Now I have a full set that I'm not using.

I know MikeDealer had a link to reproduction red shock collars, but they aren't sold anymore. Any other ideas? I have a great set of red shocks, but all have broken collars. Thanks for the help!

Anything will be an improvement over the Striker's front springs. They are also the only shocks I have that actually fit decently - small enough and not too long.

Though I agree with the others that the red shocks are pretty finicky and probably only useful protecting the car from "shelf shock"...

You do have some options.

There's also a guy selling red alloy retaining rings similar to the above, but I can't for the life of me find one on eBay right now...??
