Race modded Scorpion rebuild

Post by HatTrick »

Hi!
First real post here for me. This seems to be the most active Scorpion 2014 thread of the different forums I've searched through so far.

I found out about the re-re Scorpion just this past april and I just went WOW!!

I have a vintage Scorpion that I got second hand back in the summer of '83 from a guy who used to race it and had done a few mods on it.
Haven't driven it for maybe 25 years now but I've had the idea back in my head for a long time to put a new gearbox on it to allow for new motors and get it running again.
It has a Le Mans 480 Gold motor, 8.4V battery and a mechanical resistor speed-control. Mods I've done was to replace some part with the higher grade ones from the Turbo such as rear shocks, rear suspension plate, rear tires and wheels, servo saver and steering links, ball bearing kit and a gear diff.

Here's a few pics after I dug it up from the garage and just dry-brushed off all dust and dirt and rinsed the bodies with water.
Together with vintage Sanwa GC2200 radio and Beetle body painted a lovely light blue and tastefully decaled by 8 year old me.

The pics in the previous post were taken back in april.
A few weeks ago I ordered some new parts and electronics with the goal of getting the car running for the Nordic Vintage Challenge on Oct 23-25th.

New LiPo batteries, ball bearings, diff shims, alu shock clamps. Not in the pic is also Hobbyking 45A ESC and Imax B6AC charger.

Brand new Scorpion parts and a 19T brushed motor.

The bare chassis.

25 year old grease and dirt!!

Everything disassembled and thoughroughly cleaned!

Started assembling the chassis but it seems I haven't been able to fully straighten out the chassis bars. When I tighten the screws the whole chassis twists a bit.

LeMans 480Gold motor running again for the first time in 25 years!! :D

That was two weeks ago when I had time to sit down at work and work on it.
Since the I've ordered new tires and wheels, hard front and medium rears and matt chrome wheels.
Also looking at getting some softer front tires like these
https://www.jconcepts.net/shop/rips-19%E2%80%9D-rc10
Along with these wheels
https://www.jconcepts.net/shop/hazard-19-rc10-front-wheel

I saw on another forum that Kyosho will be coming out with Hex-adapters for the Scorpion and was thinking I would be able to get some alternate tires like these:
https://www.jconcepts.net/shop/double-dees-17-rc10
but I don't know what kind of wheels I could get that would fit the Scorpion.

I've also ordered some new gears for the gearbox as the old ones were really worn as well as new caster, steering and servo linkages and chassis bars.

Only thing missing now (I think...) is a new radio and steering servo. I'm looking at getting a Sanwa/Airtronics MT-4S and maybe a Savöx 1258TG servo.

Nice race prepped Scorpion, and it would do nicely in this thread to http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=2329&p=437624#p437624
Cheers
Lars

Neat car with some history. It's amazing how we all abused and butchered our cars back then, usually in the name of lightness. Now, being collectibles, we wished we hadn't done things like drill holes all over the place. But back then, when the cars were new, and parts easily available, we never thought twice about it. If I could only go back and tell my 16 year old self not to ruin the cars..................

Thanks!

I wouldn't call it butchered but rather vintage race prepped to be lighter. :)
This was done by the car's first owner who used to race it sometime back in '82-'83.

I wish I could've kept the resistor speed control but unfortunately the last "step" before max voltage was burned off so it would only work at max or nothing so I went with a Hobbyking 45A ESC.

Haha, Lars, I think my car has a place in that thread for sure!

When I was younger, a friend of mine had a Scorpion. At the time I didn't know who made it nor did I care because it just didn't appeal to me. Anyways, he ended up tearing it apart and i don't think it was ever put back together and basically got trashed. Kinda wished I would've known back then.
