kyosho mid optima (need helpy)

Post by rhyde »

Hi all first post
I just bought a kyosho mid optima in excellent condition, with box, instructions, controller, everything.
I would like to restore it to mint condition and by doing so i need to get a new body and wing and decals

if original is not an option i was wondering if i could get an opinion on the replica body from
marwan
http://www.marwanrc.com/product.sc?productId=33&categoryId=2

or the company called team blue grove (tbg)
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111720305737?euid=c4ccd873a0ca4bef8d70097adff61a92&cp=1

also the decals from mci
http://mciracing.ca/products/vintage-kyosho-optima-mid-decals-version-20

so some questions if i may
1. Who does a better body Marwan or TBG (as best and as close to original)
2. Who does better decals Marwan or TBG (as best and as close to original)
3. Were the original rims supplied with the mid optima metal and needed to be painted white, cos mine came with metal and look exactly like the original not

some pics attached
kind regards

welcome to the board.

Nice looking optima mid. just an opinion and have read lots of threads about bodies that Marwan is better quality for the price. Have heard alot of good things about Marwan bodies. I'm sure someone else will chime in about Marwan though. I have not had any on hand myself to compare them too so I can't state that as fact though...just what others have wrote about them. You might get lucky to find a NOS on ebay but you'll definitely pay through the nose for it. If you stay around long enuf and meet the criteria you could also get into the b/s/t area and put up a wanted thread for one but to be honest I haven't seen any NOS on the board get traded/sold without a buggy attached to it and you already have that covered

As far as the wheels, they did not come in aluminum factory. If yours are metal they are aftermarket. Like you said they do look factory though. Looks like factory that were painted quite well.

Nice MID.

If You want to bring it back to original,
You´ll need new tires (Marwan) and strip the rims back to factory white (seems like they´re painted after being used)
And then, You might wanna address the shocks - looks like someone borrowed the originals, front looks like Duratrax (very orange). Can´t see the rears, but they look like bare aluminum?

Marwan does great work and If You only need one body, I´d take his.

I have used MArwan bodies and they are Excellent. TBG IMO charges grossly too much for shipping, and I have no idea how good the bodies are. My .02

Let' agree not to agree: I see white flashmarks around the edges. I also see none-original tires, so my bet is the previous owner bought tsome new rims at one point ;)
oh, and the beers are way better where I live anyway

Marwan's bodies are slightly better, but TBG's bodies are quite good...nice and thick. They're pulled from original bodies rather than a mold, though, so they end up shrinking a tad after cooling. It might be 5% shrinkage, which doesn't really matter for the body, it'll still trim & fit nicely. The Lexan gearbox cover, however, is a bit of a pain to trim & fit because that 5% shrinkage is exacerbated with small parts like the cover. The other issue is some of the trim lines on TBG bodies can get a bit vague and hard to see, but that's not really a big issue. The Marwan bodies have slightly better overall detail.

I also agree that TBG charges too much for shipping--even within Canada, where they're located. So I would avoid buying from them unless I needed several items; they're pretty fair about combined shipping.
