Traxxas Bullet transmission case options

I'm building a Bullet from the ground up and was lucky enough to source almost everything minus the transmission cases. I bought perhaps the roughest Bullet ever from eBay as a guide(im still itchy from cleaning it) for this and the cases are just really nasty. Are there any others that will work? I'm not too concerned about keeping them white just functional. Any help would be great.

the problem is that the bullet incorporated the rear arm mounts and bulkhead into the transmission case, and the case is not pure nylon, so this ends up being a very weak part of the design.

you have a couple of options depending on how accurately you want to restore the car.

first, is to try and find the right case on ebay, they do show up from time to time and i believe were also used on the rad and sledghammer or hawk. you would have to dig to find the part number and cross reference, but it helps when searching on ebay.

second, the hawk 2, and rad 2 used a newer trans case and divorced arm mounts and rear bulkhead, which are the same that carry through to today more or less. You can find those trans cases, bulkheads and arm mounts relatively easily. The down side is there are other holes that need to be drilled in the chassis to replace those parts. You also need to convert the motor plate as well.

the nice thing is you can find those parts realtively cheaply, and a donor car would be ideal to transfer it all over. the benfits are a better trans and tougher design.

if you already have a donor car, try a really good soak in dish soap and the old toothbrush scrub, and beyond that, some soaking in Simple Green cleaner undiluted. that should really clean up the plastic to almost new as long as it's not damaged.

I let the cases soak in the undiluted Simple Green bath for a few days & after some scrubbing and scraping they came out pretty nice & relatively new looking. Thanks for letting me know of the black case that came up but I think this one will do just fine now.

I started to assemble the car now and ran into another snag with the idler gear shaft thats mounted outside the transmission on the gold motor bracket. The original bearings seized onto the shaft making them a real problem to get off. So I resorted to the dremel & cut them off leaving a gouge in the shaft. I attempted to polish it out but to no avail, now the new bearings will not fit without forcing them on.

-The solution was another parts order, I found one on ebay.

jwscab Would you happen to know what rear hubs & bearings will work on this?

I really thought I ordered everything I needed but the donor car was especially rough...I should have taken pics, it was truly nasty and smelled of cat piss...! But it was all there. Its just now after cleaning it completely that the real flaws come out , parts that I thought were salvageable are not.

The rear hubs should be easy to find, they haven't changed much over the years. Originals we're obviously white but you can get them in black or gray now I think.

If you go to the Traxxas website, there is a section for discontinued models and they have a bullet partslist with all the part numbers. You should find it and download it for your reference.

I think the bearings are 5x10mm unflanged. Could be 5x11 though.

The rear hubs were part number #1652 and the bearings for those are the 5x11x4. If you end up breaking the mounts off the rear case it seems like a lot of work to change it over like mentioned above but its not too terrible and expensive. You can pick up entire parts cars for pretty cheap to get most of what you need and its worth every bit of trouble if you wanna keep this thing going.

I definitely plan to keep this one going klavy69, at least for a few runs before the eventual shelf.

I have a few other projects going at the same time as well. My thinking is while restoring one and I come to a parts snag, I move it aside and and work on another. Thanks for the info on the rear hub carriers those are definitely correct. I ordered a white pair and a black pair this morning. So while I wait for them to arrive I'm building a new RC10b6 that I'll race locally this summer with my son.
