Hirobo Zerda: from wreck to runner

Post by threesheds »

Thanks to Dadio for tips. Got the replacement r/h rear subframe same part as rock'n city model.
The strip down allowed for checking bearings and rods, cleaning and lube. all generally in good nick. I found the main timing belt was so tight it didn't need any tension of the tensioner. Asking myself if the belt is a bit short if its a replacement but I'll worry about that if it breaks. There's no dust cover for the gearbox so just cut out a bit of clear plastic and now I'm mulling over how to make a dust cover for the drive belt and pinions. When some mini micro allan keys arrive I'll change the drive pinion on the moter to 16 tooth and hopefully get the right position for the tensioner.

I think the main belt should be 336 teeth , if you could pop up some pictures of your wheel hex adapters I'd love to see them.
If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.

Hi, £2.67 on ebay 4xUpgrade 122042 Green Aluminum Alloy Wheel Hex Hub for RC 1:10 Model Car 12mm
( 182463426918 ). the wheels were £9 RC 1:10 Buggy Car Front Rear Mesh Shape Wheel Rim Rubber Tyre Pack of 4
( 272852981614 ). I did put the backs on the front by mistake and they fouled the steering knuckles (silly billy)

I thought the little raised flange would rest against the inner part of the bearing but need to file out the bore a bit at an angle. a nylon washer takes up a bit of play as a temporary fix. pics with and without the washer. Frankly, its about the same as using the zerda round spacer with a suitable nut to fill the gap. But getting 12mm hex hubs gives more options for wheels.

Just cut out a piece of clear plastic as a gearbox dust cover. It can also be used as a template to make a better one at a later date.
Image
with the 18 tooth drive pinion the belt runs the right side of the guide pulley but seems a bit slack? with the guide pulley at its lowest position. Thinking about filing out the adjustment slot by a couple of mm
this seems to be the optimum positions for servo, esc and rx with no radio plate.

If I make a hard plastic gearbox dust cover I might put the esc on top

I used 4 O rings on the tensioner pulley at one point to get tension on an over long belt ,or if you want a correct belt for the 18 tooth pinion I had to order 10 for $10 so you can have one for the price of the postage if you need it .

I'm using 93 tooth and was toying with getting 90's but that would mean 6mm shorter - too much? . I thought yours were 93 as well but if a bit shorter i'll have 1 or 2. Otherwise was going to wrap a bit of insulating tape around the idler.
The manual says 93 for 18 tooth and 91 for 15/16 tooth I recall. As they're about £3 each you got a good deal.

I know it sounds wierd but have you actually counted the teeth on the belt , I ordered a 93mxl belt and it was about 120 teeth ! Some manufacturers have an odd part number that is related to imperial length not tooth count !
Mine is at mid way on the tensioner with the 18tooth pinion and 93 tooth belt .

My belts def. 93 tooth but may be worn and stretched. 1x91 tooth is well worn.
If u don't mind letting me have a couple of yours email me and I,ll pay thru PayPal. Much obliged.
I see US suppliers have a greater choice than any uk ones

eBay from seller Greenandypants 6x15x5 is what I ordered , double rubber sealed for wheel axles but you could use rubber one side metal on the other in places like the gearbox (different size),fitted with rubber side out , you could use double rubber or if it's going to be a track only car then double metal sided .
Sorry I've not got to the post office for the belts , been busy , I'll see if I can get the wife to do it tomorrow .

Question, were zerda roll cage colour variants painted or coloured plastic?

Coloured plastic as far as I know , red for RTR , black for the kit and there was a yellow one as well but I don't know much about it .

I just noticed in one of your pictures that the screw hole for the belt tensioner pulley is on the left of the pulley not the right , I think you have it on upside down , could be why you get no tension ?

Yes. I noticed that. Long story but it doesn't make a diff to the adjustment range. I,ll turn it round though Now I can't remember if I got 18 t pinion, motionco only do 4mm bore so may only have 16t fitted , think I got 15 and 16t ones. More thorough strip down scheduled. And I've found some ally to make a radio plate. Bearings coming. I've been reading old threads re geared pinion conversion.
Big issue is a dust cover for belt which may have to be thin balsa and plastic
Can only find 18t with 4 mm bore or just pilot hole. did you find any. Anyway I,m still chuffed it runs. Wonder if u r bidding for the rockn city?
