This was RIT dyemore royal purple ... all in one batch. Parts were cleaned and peroxided before. It came out pretty good IMO.

it's lovely but my question was about BLACK dye

I can do perfect purple-ish dye with black dye myself, I've done it before ;)

Side note on the Rit Dyemore- it does a great job on fiberglass too. Just a takes heat and time. The results are awesome

Well, alea jacta est... this was yesterday pm. I kept adding hot water to keep the parts submerged during the process which lasted about 1hr, but the weather was very hot yesterday so it did evaporate all the time. Now it's all resting in the garage, I will dig them out, rinse the parts and report how it worked (or not) :)

I know you guys don't give a crap because you've done it 100 times already, but I still feel the trauma from when I tried 10 years ago and it miserably failed...

... but this time I think I can claim success thanks to your help

(not a hint of purple even bang in the sun AND overexposition)

So here's how I did it.
- 1hr simmering, a few drop of dish soap in there, as little liquid as possible while keeping parts submerged
- about 24hrs cool down in the bath
- rinse with warm water

I poured the liquid in a jug for future use... I have a bit less than 1L of black stuff.... was concentrated as hell

Thanks all! I can now keep going with some of the builds :)

Yep, that definitely looks BLACK!! Looks really good Paul. It would be an interesting experiment to toss into the process a sacrificial part then slice it open to reveal how deeply the dye has penetrated.

Nobody currently makes compatible fluorescent dye at least that I’ve been able to find. I have a couple bags of yellow but only one fluorescent pink, so I’m saving it for a future build.

I have considered doing a flou pink or green themed build and another obstacle is finding all the bright white rpm parts to dye. AE parts can be brightened then dyed but white RPM parts always seemed like the best base for dying flou colors. It drives me nuts that they only seem to make parts in black anymore.
