RC10DS - 1969 Camaro - Payback Project

Post by LoboNYC »

Happy New Year!!!

In Fed of 2017 I was given a RC10DS and asked to bring it back to life by a buddy of mine. No deadline, no rush....as payment i received an 1:8 scale Ofna buggy with pull start Hyper .21 engine and servos (no radio). The deal was sealed at a handshake.

DS Project car as received
Image

Missing parts: Wheels, wheel bearings, Axle drive cups, dog bones, axle hubs, axle bearings, outer hinge pins, tie rods, servo mounts, slipper clutch, gear cover, front and rear stabilizer bars, and front shock end mounts. The rear bulkhead and battery cup have missing areas so those two items will be replaced.

I started by putting the aluminum parts through several applications of Easy-Off over cleaner in order to remove the black coating.

The engine mount needs a few more applications of Easy-Off
Image

The gear box will be freshened up...the diff drive cup ends will be cleaned and polished
Image

Some elbow grease and sand paper i polished up the engine mount, nose plate, nose tubes, and axle cups.

Check out the Diff now...BAM!!! Polished

Chassis polishing....B-Stamp.

Suspension mounts & Arm installed.

Rear bulkhead replaced and stainless steel hardware used throughout.

Front end bumper was replaced and stainless steel hardware used. Front stabilizer bars installed.

The nose tubes were polished up and the front end looks mighty clean in my opinion

Engine mount just got a new RPM gear cover

This photo is as far as ive gotten with the project.

Next on the agenda is cleaning and mounting the shocks, Installing the fixed gear hub (part #6562) to eliminate the slipper clutch, and adding the ESC/Motor combo.

Will update as soon as i make some progress....i got a few DS projects up my sleeve!

Let me know what you guys think of this project

Nice work, the black and silver look really good together!

I was reading the DS manual recently and you need a different top shaft for the slipper eliminator.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page,

ASC6561, top shaft.

Cheers, Dave. :)

No...not hoarding...lol

I just got four direct drive axle hubs last week! finding these three shafts on the spot was perfect timing. The hubs will have their matching shafts! At least three of them. The stars are aligned, the DS world is in harmony

Thanks a bunch Erik, This build will be topped off with a HPI 1969 Camaro body. Mike (Quadflyer) wants to paint it white with black stripes. I may end up mounting the body and leaving it clear when i present him with the finished DS. Im sure im going to miss this project

Seriously, I only went looking for the DS manual about a week ago.

When I was on E-bay, I spotted the 6561 top shaft.

Should look really good with the new ball cups.

Great job on the rebuild Alex. I think the car looks good as is and the white turnbuckles will stand out too much. It really has a simplistic cleanliness to it right now. I don't think adding white parts to this one will make it look better than it already does.

Im amazed at how things worked out. The minute I read your post I searched ebay with the quickness. I found three shafts from one vendor and purchased all three. I still cant believe i found three of them.

The white ball cup is what my buddy wants on this build although i'm with Romulus22, the white turnbuckles will stand out too much. Once i complete mounting the shocks i 'll take a few photos with the black ends, then take a few photos with the white ends, present them to my buddy and let him choose.

Thanks Todd!!! Truely glad you like this build, I love the clean and simple look as well, so much that i started stripping another chassis so i can do something similar for myself

My Buddy can't wait to get this on his shelf!
Too bad he wont run her because she is a smooth roller. Gear mesh is perfect and quiet.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks!!!

Would you believe Im rebuilding another DS in this similar style?

I got it years ago, the only thing I did was slap a mustang body on it and ran it as is.

Now im rebuilding as this one except will have axle adapters for use with 12mm hex wheel.

Once I get further done I will post in a thread.
