Re: RC10 Transmission Help

Post by XLR8 »

I run 10.5 brushless with a 6 gear and a few week ago I stripped an idler gear. Upon disassembly, I found the lower pivot was loose. I applied loctite to the pivot nut and tightened the heck out of it, replaced the bad idler, cleaned everything well and re-assembled. I've ran the car several times since with no problems. I'm certain the loose pivot caused the failure.

I had a similar experience as above. I replaced the damaged parts, spur and pinion gears, and cleaned everything up. Made sure everything was tight and had successful runs without any issues. I'm running the Castle Sidewinder brushless esc and 4600kv motor combo with 2s lipo from smc-racing.

The 6 gear was run with pretty hot motors back in the day so I wouldn't work too much running something like a 13.5 in a 6 gear. Otherwise, it's also getting hard to find stealth outdrives, so get what you can get.

thanks for the tips guys. this gives me confidence to run something a little hotter than i was expecting after talking with the folks at AE.

IF i stay with the tekin rebel esc i currently have, can i run something like a 10.5 turn motor with that? would the esc limit it in any way?

sounds like whatever i do i should certainly plan to go back thru my 6gear tranny and make sure everything is good and tight and greased up before i turn up the motor.

A 10.5 is a brushless motor. You can't run that with your Tekin. You would need a brushless ESC.

Ah missed that part in xlr8 post. What about a 13.5 turn motor that jwscab mentions? Is that brushless? I’m just wondering how far I can push this transmission on my current esc.

That's brushless as well.

I don't think I'd run anything bigger than a 19 turn brushed motor with a Rebel.

Yes - all the numbers you see as "8.5" or "13.5" are brushless. This is a technology that is not compatible with your brushed Rebel speedo.

The rebel is listed here
http://www.teamtekin.com/archive.html

instructions here
https://www.rcdocuments.com/documents/Tekin_Rebel_Manual.pdf

It can pass 140A (theoretically) which, when compared with Tekin's top of the line G10's 300A from the same era, means it was a good "sport" speedo bitd. It could probably handle a 16 or 17 turn (brushed) mill. I wouldn't go anywhere below that based on your speedo, as well as the 6G, especially if you're using lipos, because they can pump out so much current so much easier than good old nicads.

scr8p beat me to it (as usual).

Very nice A-stamp btw... Are you sure you want to run a pristine tub like this one?

And to round it out, a good 16 or 17 turn will run with no problems in a 6 gear trans all day long.

Depending on the battery you are using (lithium polymer or NiMH or Nicd) you will have to watch your temps and run time. The lipo and NiMh capacities are much higher than older nicd technologies and can overheat brushed motors and speed controllers.

Thanks for the links. Learned some things about my esc.

Didn’t mean to hijack this thread. The op is the one with an ‘A’ stamp. My ride is ‘B’ but decent condition.

I do plan to run it. I also have a vintage kyosho raider pro arr that is not currently operational. I may swap the rebel esc to get it running then take a min to reevaluate my plans for this one. Right now I’m thinking I’d like this rc10 setup for speed on a carpet track, with the 6 gear transmission and a brushed motor. If I run 6cell nimh batteries, what’s a good esc for this application? After reading the specs on the rebel, I think your right it is a decent sport model but why not put something in that can handle more power right? Assuming the transmission can take it.

If you're gonna replace the esc, just buy a brushless esc/motor combo.

okay so admittedly i dont know much about this car or rc in general. so i need to ask why? i thought brushless would be more torque and harder on my transmission, even using the same 6cell nimh battery. not to mention more money. i have no idea what price range im looking at for a new esc and motor for a brushed system but it seems most brushless setups i see are $150 on up. i guess i was thinking a brushed setup would be half that, $50-$75 tops.

Here's a 13.5 setup for under $100, with a $7.50 off coupon.

https://www.amainhobbies.com/hobbywing-xerun-justock-zero-spec-sensored-brushless-esc-motor-combo-13.5t-hwa38020401/p453305?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsMLLx57P2wIVisDACh2KuQcWEAQYASABEgInevD_BwE

If you're really worried about tearing up the trans, go with a 17.5. More than enough speed, and most tracks have a class for it.

You could even go with one of the Trackstar combos. jwscab has one in one of his cars and it runs great.

what is a stealth outdrive? is this the stealth transmission? a part of the stealth tranny?
