Tomorrow I Race Again

So it's been around 15 years since I've done any rc racing. I was doing some semi regular nitro sedan racing around 2002 or so. Haven't been in any kind of organized off road race since the early 90's. There is a nice indoor offroad turf track about 30 min. from my house that I've been practicing on about once a week for the last month or two. They're supposed to have a decent showing every Sunday for racing. Tomorrow will be my first race. Time for me to get back in the saddle. The track owner told me my lap times are on parr with the regular novice class runners. I have no doubt that I will be getting lapped by some 12 year old tomorrow  I expect it will be a ton of fun and I'm planning on making it a weekly event. I've been playing with different tires and suspension adjustments on my Factory Team 4.2T and I think I have it reasonable close. I'll try to remember to take some picks of the track as it's a very cool setup. I'll let you guys know how I did when I get back tomorrow!

Your down south from me a ways- what track are you headed to?

Have fun tomorrow! I haven’t raced in years but I still remember the sounds like it was yesterday!

“Corner corner corner!!!”
“Who’s on 76?”! Turn off your radios”

Hahaha

Yeah I'm pretty excited. Even though I know that I'm far from being competitive yet. I'm going to Poorboys Raceway & Hobbies in Grants Pass. They have a great track. They put on a few big races throughout the year that attract racers from all over and every Sunday there is a local "club racing" scene. I've yet to see how many entrants there are on Sundays. They don't run an ST class, but in the novice class, it's sort of a run what you got situation to make it easy for new racers to get into the hobby, so they said it was ok to run my truck. If/when I advance to the mod class, I'll have to get myself a new buggy. Everything I have is at least 25 years too old to be competitive. It's amazing to see the evolution of racetracks. The configuration of the track right now has a 180 degree hairpin that goes vertical up the wall about 10 ft or so!

Well, I'm back from the race. The picture tells the story. This happened at the beginning of the third 5 min. heat. It was a learning experience for sure. The biggest lesson was to race with the same tires you practice with. Don't try something new on race day. Going from some old Losi step pins to the purpose made turf tires in the pic, was akin to training in a piper cub and then being handed a jet. Overall it was a ton of fun with a great group of friendly folks and I will be back to race again next weekend, as long as my new chassis arrives in time. I forgot my camera so I clicked off this pick of the track with my phone.

Ouch! That's a common problem since the chassis is very narrow and weak in that area. I've had two break that way (SC10 and B4.1) until I reinforced the chassis with an aluminum plate. I think someone over at the RCShortCourse.com forum was selling the plates. Anyway, it sounds like you had fun and that's what matters most. Please don't forget your camera next week; we wanna see some action shots. :D

That looks like a good part to add to the new chassis. It wasn't bad really. A new chassis cost me $18 and the nose brace was $4 at the hobby shop. Total destruction fixed for $22 isn't bad at all. To be fair to the truck, I did come off that wall ride at the top and nose dived straight to the ground. I new I was finished for the day before it hit the ground.  I'll try my best to remember my camera. Next time, the wife should be with me, so I'll try to get her to record some of the action. :D

wow

I might have broken a B4.1 bitd like that actually, now that I'm thinking about it

Sorry to hear that you first race after 15years didn't quite go as planned... try again next time and drive safely

Ha! I've done that to a T4 myself. I probably jumped about 11 feet of a 12 gap between doubles. I epoxied it back together to finish the day since it was part of a points series.

At least you probably had some good style points on the half-pipe...err... I mean, wall ride!

I ordered that brace from DE Racing. Might save me from another dnf incident.

Got that brace from DE Racing today. Awesome product. Perfect fit and easy install with the supplied drill bit. It makes this weak section of the chassis noticeably stronger. Thanks for the tip on this part Tamlok. :D So I'm ready to get back on the track! I just bought a new "shorty" lipo, got the new turf tires mounted, and I'm headed to the track tomorrow for some practice before the race on Sunday. 8)

Hey, glad you got your truck fixed. That brace should help a lot. If you don't mind me asking, what brand/spec shorty did you buy?

It's a Gens ACE 5000mah 2s 60c. A bunch of the guys at the track use them and seem to be happy with them. At $50, I figured I would give one a try. I'll probably pick up another one this weekend while I'm there. I had to solder up some 4mm bullet connectors onto my esc battery leads, but it's about a 2 oz. weight loss over the batteries I've been using.
