GoMachV’s 3d printing thread

Post by GoMachV »

First off, I’m new at this. I’m not a pro. I’m learning as I go

I have two printers. A Malyan M200 and a currently unfinished Creality CR-10s. The Malyan is printing really well right now so I’m in no hurry to finish up the Creality. The CR-10s will be faster and it’s much larger- but neither are concerns at my skill level currently

As far as cad, I’m using Fusion 360. Titans of CNC Academy provides free training on Fusion, I would highly recommend signing up. You can use Fusion as a hobbyist for free.

On to my first parts. I drew up some Bolink/MiniCars pieces to use on a Schumacher Digger 10 build. These are the first parts I’ve built from the ground up without help. They have been great building blocks. I haven’t printed the wheels yet- I drew them as 2.2” but in the standard Bolink styling. Anyway, here are some pics

I think a 3d printer is going to have to be my next investment , those parts look really good well done .
If a jobs not worth doing then its certainly not worth doing well.

Wow! Those look really nice. I tend to shy away from 3d printed stuff because of the rough layered look of the parts, although shapeways puts out some nice stuff. Yours look great though! Nice clean edges and smooth contours. Those are some of the nicest parts I've seen. What material are you using? Are the parts cleaned up or is that how they came off the printer bed?

the parts came off mostly like they are shown, although I do drill them. I printed the parts with support so there is some cleanup needed. The support is a real pita to remove, so I may just try without on the next parts. These are printed at draft quality as well, so im quite happy with their appearance. They are just printed on a cheap $140 Malyan printer using Rock Space PLA from Amazon. I bought a spool of black for around $17, and they sent a coupon for a free spool just for leaving a review, so I did- and got my free white spool.

If you could do it over again would you still have bought an M200 as your first printer?

It was great for learning, but I would have been money ahead to just buy the big one first. Dan scared me away from the Prusa plus the wait time sucked but if I had to do it over again I would still have to really weigh the pros and cons between the Prusa and the CR10s that I got. Both are great, but very different.

Okay so if you're just getting started, to save money just skip the Malyan and go straight to the Prusa or CR10 because that's what you'll want eventually anyway.

Yes. I wouldn’t say that I learned anything from the small printer that I wouldn’t have learned on the big machine.

Since my little guy is working so well, I haven’t bothered to finish up the big one. I will eventually, and the little guy will go in the closet till I need it.

Wheels are underway. Going to be interesting with no support for the beads. Watching it to see how it goes.
