What servo for my OIN racer?

Post by orangemazda »

Guys,

I am in the midst of an OIN build that I intend on racing. I havent raced since 1994. I have never used a 2.4 radio, Lipo battery, or brushless motor.

I am slowly gathering up my parts. I've got my Orion 8.5 motor, and my Reedy lipo already.

I need to make a decision on a radio and a servo. I'm at the point on my build where it would be nice to have a servo to set up the steering.

What do you guys recomend for a good quality servo for an OIN RC10?

My buddy has a Spektrum 6070 and is happy with that.

Get something faster than .11 and with more than 100oz of torque.

For the price ($50) I really like the ProTek 100ss from Amain. It got great torque for a buggy with the speed you need.
The Airtronics 94770 servo is nice too but about $20-$30 more. They also both have blue aluminum center case sections to help keep it cool.

ProTek 100ss - upto.09 transit time with 168 oz. of torque - $49.99
Airtronics 94770 - upto .09 transit time with 153 oz. of torque - $74.99

I'll second the Protek 100s. I have one in my B3 and it's a great servo. I also use Savox 1258's and like those. I've bought several used 1258's for $40-$50.
RC10 Short Arm | Novak Tempest ESC | Tamiya Torque Tuned 25T | Savox 1258 | Stealth Trans w/ Exotek Slipper Eliminator (geared 24/81)
RC10B3 | HW Just Stock Club Spec | Reedy 13.5 | Savox 1258

JR Z9100S - Might be a bit quick for someone not used to quick servos but it is the best servo I have used. It works great with spektrum, never had a brownout. Not sure about today but back in the day JR servos were known for their centering and holding power.

Ok, I just ordered the sexy Sanwa/Airtronics servo...next dumb question is, do I need to run a servo saver on my OIN car (pictured above) with a servo like this? The car is running the standard "Worlds" style steering with ball bearings instead of bushings.

good question. but I know they say run servo saver. but I don't think metal gear servos back then were as strong and powerefull as today. But then you look at a b4 lets say or a b5, and they have solid steering system with no servo saver.

Does a B4 or B5 have an adjustable collar and spring on the steering block similar to the old RC10T?

for the best performance, no servo saver. You do run the risk of breakage, but when its intact it is more precise. If your just bashing around run one, it is basically a fuse for the system

cant say about a b4 or b5, way too new for my knowledge base

I wouldnt worry about a servo saver. Metal gear servos are pretty tough now. I use a cheap 996R towerpro in my clodbuster running 6900kv castles and its lasted over two years now.

One thing i've noticed when racing the older RC10's with hi power metal gear servos without servo savers... You WILL pop off the outer steering ball cup with little effort when racing. Do yourself a favor and replace the outer steering ball stud/cup with a ball end like what is used on the end of the shock shafts. AE p/n 6471 should do the trick.

All of my racing RC10's I have done this mod to after learning the hard way. Doesn't matter if it is an old AE ball cup, new AE or RPM or whatever. It will happen.
