Looking for a (sane) brushless setup recommendation

Post by i crash cars »

I'm wanting to revive my old RC10T with a brushless setup. I don't want to put anything ridiculous in the truck as I haven't driven RC in a long time and I don't trust myself with a really powerful setup. It needs to be controllable, I don't need LUDICROUS SPEED . Just for a frame of reference, my previous setup was using a 17t brushed motor on a NiMH battery. I was looking to get some recommendations for a complete setup between 15T - 21T or between 3000kv - 3500kv. I'd like to stay at under $100 for the complete setup including a programming card (if needed).

Thanks!

I don't know if you still need info, but I am running a Castle 3800 SCT combo in my 10T.
I also picked up a Castle Link. This to me is an almost perfect combo.
The link allows you to tune it from mild to wild. The tuning ability is amazing.
I originally had it set to where if you punched it hard it would stand it on the rear bumper.
That was fun until the ball diff said NOPE. Turned it back, rebuilt the diff and it is alot of fun to drive.
If you don't buy the Castle link, it stays under your $100 limit, Castle Link adds about $20
You don't need the link to program it, but it definitely opens up alot of options.
Oh and it runs very cool, no worries about over heating.

I run a Castle 5700, which I geared for top speed when I was running on the street. It's crazy fast, and now that I'm racing on turf I've turned it way down to about 60%. I agree that the program-ability of the Castle is pretty cool. My set-up was about $125 with the programming card.

I have bought a couple of Reedy 3300 kv motor and speed speed control sets for 60-70 dollars from the chop shops on eBay that part out new RTR vehicles. If you watch them closely for sales you can really find the stuff cheap. You won't hear many people brag about RTR stuff, but for a vehicle that I don't bash on, they squirt around pretty nice.

Me and a friend have these Reedy motors in a couple of vehicles, and they run just fine. Probably exactly what you're looking for.

Most good brushless setups will allow you to adjust the throttle settings so you could adjust the power output until you get comfortable. I have a 3800 Castle setup and also the Reedy 3300 setup. I found both to be fairly good as upgrades over the stock motors that were brushed back in the day. I also have gone to a 4600 and a 5700 Castle setup in my cars with lipo but that would definitely be up into 'ludicrous speed' compared to the brushed setups.

A little update for me.
I am running a HobbyKing 3100KV and 60A ESC in a basher and can't believe how well it is performing.
It was more of an experiment than anything else.
I paid $31 and change, shipped on eBay for the combo.
If you look at the pics online, it is either made the same place as the Hobbywing stuff, or it is a very good copy.
It will stand my T on the bumper and runs quite cool. I'm using, I'm running a 19/81 gear combo
