Did your photo ever appear on a cardboard motor package?

I had an orange Race Prep motor box many years ago and I swear there was a photo of a Dunn on it.

Mike told you guys all the secrets.

The biggest reason he didnt win in Australia was the tires. Yokamo and Associated teams had special tires just for that race and our teams were caught with our pants down and didnt know that they stretched the rules or found a lupoll in the rules.

These tires were larger and had thousands of pins or spikes......2.2 in wheels and the tires balloned over the side of the wheels. Mike also qualified 2nd in 2wd with his losi and x pattern tires that were truly the under dog of the race but he gave Masami a run for his money and also got taken out by some of the associated team on purpose while leading and lapping them. This was an ongoing fight between the darkside(losi) and the Force(associated) side. My mistake was not taking crap from anyone and speaking out how I felt at the races which made other racers hate us....

I am sorry about that if I offended anyone back in the day.....

I remember that I was pretty upset when I witness this unsporting behavior! I was standing next to some of the Associated team driver during the first or second A-final. And I heard them whisper that Mike should be taken care of, and not be allowed to pass Masami. And it was allot of talking in the pits afterword, and the comment wasn’t nice about the way Mike has been treated on the track.
But I reckoned that Associated and Yokomo had invested so much money to win this race that they couldn’t afford to lose. There was a story that they had taken some dirt with them to analyze after the warm-up.
Cheers
Lars

What a great read this is, just went through it all.
My old racing buddy Mike tapp went to the 89 worlds and told me the same thing about the tires. Without the 2.2's you were all but toast. He was with Schumacher and things didnt go to well, he had never driven on a surface quite like it. Later we had heard that the "force" had constructed a track just like it in japan to develop the tires on. So obviously there was a lot of money involved at the time! Im gonna have to pull my vhs out and have another look at the racing and watch more of Mike Dunn this time. Steve did you clip the x pattern tires or modify them another way? Also how about you tell the story of the losi chassis on mikes car, I bet people will find it quite interesting

thanks

I'm getting close to finishing my Pro Radiant in the Race Prep Mike Dunn livery. Just wanted to ask what 2.0" tyres were used on the Radiant for the 89 worlds in Australia?
Thanks- Jason

The 89 worlds was the race where team losi discovered how well their "X" pattern tire worked when the knobs were cut to 1/2 the height. It was Ron Rossetti who came up with it. Without that we didn't have anything for the special yokomo tires they made. So we ran those tires on the rear and the schumacher pin front tire.

I'm sporting TF8's on the front of mine. These looked as close as possible to what I thought were on the front.

Gary it seems those gold medium width front rims are quite elusive. I have only got a used pair for the front which I got with a donor car from eBay. Occassionaly the black Boost rims show up and i was thinking of getting them gold plated to match the rears.
Its also an interesting point that they seemed to use a different front rim on the model as pictured below-

I have a question for Mike.

-just wondering what happened to your Pro Radiant in the A final? I'm pretty sure the wheel fell off. My question is though, was it human error or the design of the hub that let you down? I hope this question does not bring back any bad memories, just wondered if you moved on to a different hub system after this experience.
Personaly I think you deserve more credit. You entered a chain driven 4WD amongst a field (of at that stage) very competitive designs from all the big manufacturers on that day and you were definitely a force to be reckoned with.

Go Team Race Prep!
