The project continues at a steady pace...

Last weekend I managed to lay some paint on the bodyshell;

And I managed to score a good condition rear bulkhead cap off ebay (from Jose [mamadoesn'tletme] as it happens) for a very good price :wink:

Came up nice after a sunny bath in the peroxide 8)

Thanks Reggie - its Tamiya translucent green (can't remember what the PS No. :| ) Backed with silver to make it metallic..... its probably more 'green' than Masami's shell appears (in photo's at least) I wonder if Pactra 'Chezoom' would be nearer??

So far i'm pleased with how its going - certainly the most challenging masking job i've ever done!!

I agree - the colour really 'pops' in the light!.... Can't wait to see your car progress some more - I love the fact that I share my enthusiasm with others on here for Masami & his cars.

@ Ben - thanks for your compliment... actually I think i've been a little too precise with the black 'shadow' compared to the original :mrgreen:

Dan are those scallop designs drawn and cut freehand or did you use a ready made paint mask? This is really a great set of instructional pictures and actually may inspire me to give it a try. Always thought it was too complicated but this is really cool. Thanks and this is really a great restoration/build, I'm enjoying it very much.

This is looking wonderful! I can't wait to see the other paints laid down. Sky blue or Fl blue, pink, yellow and Fl red faded into each other. I think these are the colours? The green you used is close enough I would think, and looks fantastic! I don't think Masami Sr used Pactra paints though, so I think you are right to use Tamiya!

The masking out has been done using good quality 3M tape - it is more time consuming, requiring patience more than skill. The shell is one of Mr Lexan's Pavidis shells (so has in incorrect scoop) which has over-spray film allowing me to draw my intended design firstly on the outside with a fine marker - trying to copy the Masami design from the photos - then sticking suitably sized peices of masking tape to the inside of the shell, then tracing on the line from the outside (I made joins in the masking tape that suits the design so that the joins do not have to be 100% accurate). The masking tape is then peeled off from the inside of the shell & placed onto my cutting board for cutting using a nice new sharp scapal blade - the resulting 'spiderweb' of tape is carefully replaced back on the shell. I was going to use brush-on masking liquid, but I just couldn't trust my abilities with free-hand cutting of the design on the shell :?

The painting bit is actually the easier part IMO - although i'm not looking forward to the next stage as all my airbrush colours are waterbased.... i've not had much luck using waterbased paints in my airbrush in the past - so wish me luck!! :D
