Corally SP12 project

Post by V12 »

I´m starting a new project on building one of the early Corally 1/12th cars. Actually I never thought of a Corally project but when digging through some old stuff at a hobbyshop I didn´t found the parts I actually was looking for but some old stuff from early Corally cars. This is where the project started.

In the early days of Netherland based brand Corally they used a very hard sort of aluminium named Coral for chassis, frontend and t-bar so the brand name Corally is based on that. Later the chassis and other parts were changed to graphite but I think most guys will agree the early Corally cars with aluminium chassis are preferable and some of the best looking 1/12th cars.

The first car was the early PK Corally car in 1986 what was using stickpack batteries in the beginning then changed to Corally SP what was their first saddlepack car. Afterwards there was the SP2 in 1988 and one year later the SP12 what is my car. This also was the last Corally car using an aluminium chassis. More informations on complete timeline of Corally pan cars could be found at fantastic website http://www.corally12.nl/Eng/indexeng.htm

These are the parts I found in the beginning.

Coral chassis SP12
Coral onepiece front suspension SP12
Coral t-bar
optional graphite t-bar

I found also some small parts as wheelaxles, servoposts and the fantastic Corally gears and pinions. Both as 48DP and 0.5 modul.
The old red Corally spur gears are special as the diff balls are inserted from both sides so there is no wobble with the spurgear.

Also got some other parts as mounting hardware, diff parts, steering parts and rear damper and plate.
I think the special Corally wheel system was the only choice for the early cars so it´s good I also found new wheels.

All Corally cars are using Metric M3 screws with the early ones using aluminium screws. Later they changed to M3 Torx screws what I will use also for the SP12. I have enough of them left for this project from my old SP10G 1/10th car what I was running in the past.

On the way are also rear axle and diff drive plate and a rear pod.
Overall most parts as new but also a few used parts in good condition will be used.

Have to look for bearings but this should be no problem. One of the still missing parts are the radio plate (part# 75321) and the plastic saddlepack holders.

i had one in 1988. neat car, very distinctive, well made and different, thought it was one of the worst handling 1/12th scale cars i have ever owned. i raced it for a half season and couldn't get rid of it fast enough. returned to a 12L after that. looking forward to this project, though.

Actually similar to me. I bought a SP10G 1/10th car after I sold my Lynx II Elite. I never did like the handling of the Corally (too much understeer) even when I won a race with it. After some month I went with a RC10LS what I did like much more.

But the good thing is with collecting vintage cars, it doesn´t matter how the car handles. You just have to like a car because it looks very good, brings back good memories or is somewhat oustanding for any reason.

Project will continue in the next days when other parts are arriving. Just hope I will find a radioplate.

Doug, do u know why ? I think, you did not add the "downstop" on the front wheels, and without adding the T-bar tweak plate. That's why the handling is not good. Chris

Today I did begin assembling the SP12. Had to sort out how the frontbeam goes on, different mounting system than newer Corally cars. Also bearings and rear axle parts are on their way.
Pictures maybe tomorrow.

Nice project. I like the old corallys although the front end was hard for me to set up and still is... I still race a SP12M Ahoniemi Euros edition occasionally :)

Not sure if you noticed this, but the radio plate you're looking for is on ebay (not mine):

Paul.

First pics of the build.
The black t-bar is aluminium as the chassis. There is also a graphite t-bar and a silver aluminium what is the same as the black one beside the colour. I think the black aluminium looks better, the graphite one was optional anyway.
The t-bar is free floating, no tweak screws.

Frontend just needs kingpins, steeringarms, wheelaxles and bearings for completing. The rear end a lot more parts.
Some parts are still on their way and some used parts need some cleaning.

Build will continue maybe tomorrow if more parts are arriving.
