Kyosho Fantom EP 4WD Ext (1/12th scale 4WD pan car)
Damn long name... Thanks to Eau Rouge for first dibs on the car. I've located a bunch of nib parts (chassis, chain drive parts, alloy hardware set, etc) incredibly quickly as well as the manual and parts list, it's all about being resourceful...
Figured I'd get a post started.
Here's what I'm starting with:
And sometimes you find things in the strangest places (you Kyosho guys will know what this is):
Let the games begin!

Beggers can't be choosers. I'd trade it in a second for a nib 480S or 480gold. Not sure if you're being sarcastic, RR.

I don't normally like 4wd cars but this is amazing
Can't wait to see it stripped down a bit to get an idea how it works.

It's in bits now... I'll take some component pics today. Quite simple how it all goes. All the parts on my wish list are on their way, too.
No Sharpie or electrician's tape on this baby! Of course I've got quadruple the purchase price in it now... But it's gonna be sweet.
Too bad we don't get these here in the states:

Looks like it's begging for a BL conversion. I just want the body and wheels...

Sorry, brushless... My understanding it that 4WD is perfectly legal in 1/12th scale, it's just not any advantage on carpet. But think of the looks you'd get....

You'd just have a slower 1/12th scale car when you're done with the conversion. 2wd 1/12th technology today is astonishing, and a current car with a brushless and a good 4-cell pack is quicker than any other road car out there on carpet. No need for 4wd on those things anymore.templeofspeed wrote:Looks like it's begging for a BL conversion. I just want the body and wheels...
ASAIK, the guys in the Spada thread on RCtech said that the wheels are not the same as the ones on the Fantom and the old Kyosho 4wd cars.

Ooops! I guess you haven't seen my showroom at tamiyaclub. I wasn't being sarcastic. Those red endbelled 240S motors go for a pretty penny. It's like finding gold. They came stock with the Turbo Optima which I have minus the motor. Sorry for the misunderstanding, in a face to face conversation you would have seen a wide smile of excitement on my face.templeofspeed wrote:Beggers can't be choosers. Re: Kyosho Fantom EP 4WD Ext (1/12th scale 4WD pan car)
Here's some pics as stripped:
The front axle is supposed to have spring kingpins, and the right axle is fitted with a double one-way bearing with a very short floating dogbone:
The rear axle is fitted with a bevel gear diff and chain drive sprocket:
The lower chassis screws are alloy, some suffered more than others from use (all were loctited in place and were not exactly falling out, thankfully I've got metric screwdrivers):
This one was a joy to remove:
Possible option part:
OK, so what's this all about ? (I know it's a BEC regulator, # Kyo 1990): I know it's not for the Fantom, which uses a simple diode to reduce the voltage for the pre-BEC receiver. It appears to be for the Turbo Optima, according to the manuals I looked through. Should I use it, or do one of you Turbo Optima guys need it? It just screams "hi-tech" for the Fantom, but maybe one of you needs it before I go cutting the ring terminals off...
