I'm new here. I've been reading tons of thread and posts for the pass week or so and I figured I'd register and post my RC10 modernizing adventure.
Just a quick history on how I got this car... My first RC was a Tamiya Hornet. I had a blast until the gear box broke and the glue that I put wouldn't hold it anymore. Then I set my eyes on the Tamiya Astute... Initially saving up to buy the radio and charger only to have the store close soon after. A few years after a new store opened in the area and I got my RC10 Team Car. I've always used my RC for bashing.
Anyway, the car stayed at my parent's place while I went away to college and eventually moved to the big city (Montreal). Now that my kids are a bit older, I figured I'd take out my old RC and show it to them so I went to get a new battery only to learn that NiCad was out and LiPo was in. Not being equip for LiPo I settled for a NiMH since I could use it with my old charger.
My two kids loved it (even though they are still too young to actually use it!). They really just enjoyed watching me control it... So now I've decided to modernize it...
Out with the old electronics:
- Kyosho Astro GXT202 75AM
- Team Novak 410-M5
- Trinity Green Machine Motor (no idea what turn it is)
In with the new electronics:
- Futaba 3PL 2.4GHz
- Castle Creation Sidewinder 3
- Castle Creation 1406 4600KV
- USB Link
- Onyx 235 Charger
- HexFly 5000 2s 20C LiPo
- Traxxas 2075 Servo
The car had little traction since my rear tires were pretty bald (like my head). So after doing a bit of research it looked like a good upgrade path was to get the RC10 conversion kits so I could use 2.2" wheels.
So I order and installed the following parts:
- #6801 RC10 Front Wheel Conversion
- #6802 RC10 Read Wheel Conversion
- #6371 RC10 CVA 3/16" Axle
- #9688 B4 Front Wheel, Yellow
- #6805 RC10 2.2 RR Wheel 3/16, Yellow
- Pro-Line Dirt Hawg Tires
After installing the CVA, as others have already indicated, the Team Car's universal joint axles seem to be longer than the CVA axles. Requiring a lot of shims to make sure that the dog-bone end fits deep enough in the out-drive. Is that because the rear A-arm on the Team Car is different than older or newer versions of the RC10? I would prefer to use the recommended number of shims (and the wheel spacer, which I've ordered). I looked at the RPM rear A-arms, but they have a note that says it will not fit the Team Car. Is there a way to get the B4 rear A-arms on this car?
Parts that I've ordered...
- #6121 Viper Body
- #9806 Read Axle Wheel Spacer
- #6252 Bell Crank
I might upgrade the slipper to V2 and eventually VTS. I think the parts I need are #9601, #7486, #9602, #9651, #9603, #7485... for the V2 upgrade.
I'm so anxious to try out this car with the new ESC and motor! But first I gotta get these new wheels mounted properly (and securely). And I thought I was done with RC stuff! I thew out all my RC Car Action magazines a few years back. I think I kept my oldest one from 1986 or 1987... I'll have to check.

Cheers
Steph
