Paintings for Asso_man!

Post by vintage AE »

Looks like I did a good enough job painting the Masmai bodies for David a while back. Now, its time for me to replicate some other schemes, like these one, an Associated manual art scheme that was done BITD in red and white with shades of gold stripes, and the box art for the Losi Jrx2 pro performance kit.

I got the Associated scheme painted, but here are some pics along the way.

Masked up

It is my first time airbrushing a oil-based paint, so I was a bit nervous. I used a candy red backed with a custom blend of silver and metallic black. I had to experiment a bit to get the right shade of red. White, didn't give a metallic look, silver was still too bright, gun metal and metallic black were too dark, but I found the right shade eventually.

The stripes were also candy colours, which were backed with silver. The middle stripe was primarily candy gold with just a little candy orange mixed in. It took even more experimenting to find the right blend of gold and orange to get the middle colour correct.

In the end, I think it came out quite nicely...

8) 8) 8) Small correction though: the RC10 is not from a manual, it’s a prototype that belonged to Gene Husting. Body was probably painted by Steve though. I don’t think the car still exists in any shape.

From what I remember, that car was given to a Japanese magazine to have an article done and was not seen again.

Right, I should have said manual art ish, it reminded me of a version of this one.

Probably the last update for a while. I have been working in the field all off this time I'm painting these bodies and it looks like I just ran out of 1/4" tape

Maybe I'll be able to source out a store in the closest town that may have tape. I have electrical tape, that should work :P

BTW, thanks for the compliments!

I just went through my painting file folder and started counting... this RC10 body is my 150th air brushed painting and the Losi will make 151 8)

I'm now back home. I've gotten some painting supplies back up to par and now have the Losi masked up. It's won't be long before she's all painted up and sent across the pond. More updates in the days to follow.

You're doing a great job of resurrecting the lost art of painting an attractive, simple-but-effective scheme. Bold but not overdone. Simple, clean striping, but not the goofy cars-with-eyes, neon-puke tribals, template-crazy examples that proliferate these days with modern cars.
Completed projects: CYANide Onroad Optima | Zebra Gold Optima | Barney Optima | OptiMutt RWD Mid
Gallery - Coel's Stalls: Marui Galaxy & Shogun Resto-Mods | FrankenBuff AYK Buffalo | 1987 Buick GNX RC12L3

That actually looks really good! (And only ONE eye...so that doesn't count.)
