Factory Works 180* Steering Bellcrank Build

Hey Nomad, did you drill the chassis yet? I have a set of 180* Delrin bellcranks that i just cut out, I’ll send you a pair if you want to try them since you already have the posts, rack and bearings. Just let me know.


I got the bellcranks from Jeff, along with a bunch of other cool stuff. Here is what I've done with them so far...

First up, I made some nylon washers to go underneath the posts. I wanted them to fit better than a steel/aluminum washer. They are 0.075" thick. This allows the plain nut on the ball stud to have 1mm clearance on the nose plate.

Next, I needed to make some spacers for the top of the post. I decided to use Titanium because I already had a 5/16" rod with a hole for 8-32 screw clearance drilled.

Here are some "new" washers for 4-40 SHCS's that I got from Jeff. They are snazzy, anodized blue! Thanks for the hook up Jeff! :mrgreen:

I didn’t think to mention it but we sometimes use the yellow nuts as spacers under the posts. It’s a tricky fit on an rc10, there is a lot of front suspension in the way of the steering assembly. Looking good so far 8) I’m hoping to cut some more delrin parts soon.

I'm waiting on an order of turnbuckle rod ends and a short broached ball stud to get the exact servo position locked on before drilling the chassis plate. I didn't have anymore black nylon to make the washers, only white left for now. I'll probably drop them in the next black dye bath. I like the bellcranks, very cool Jeff!

Looks great Nomad, meticulous as always! When you have a chance, I'd love to see an overhead shot of the setup to see what the complete thing looks like.

This Factory Works C2 is a future build with big bore shocks. I'm still collecting parts for it!

Dig it, now it's a build thread so lets get it going. 8)

The front shock tower is from Factory Works, big bore shock style. Waiting for some long (24mm length) M3 screws for the top of the shock attachment to the tower. What I have in my screw box is 24 and 26mm long. Ones to short, ones to long. :?

I have found a problem with the #6208 front arm mounts. I'd venture to say it's only with, I figure, the most recent batch from the mold. The left mount is the culprit. The hole for the screw that holds the shock tower on is oversized. A 3mm screw fits, not a 4-40. This caused me to buy 2 sets! I thought the first set was a fluke, some dude messed up so I bought a 2nd set.... same problem! So I have a stainless steel 4-40 on the right, a 3mm black oxide on the left.

OK, run my mouth long enough, a picture is due...

I've decided to go with Lunsford Racing Super Duty 3.5mm for turnbuckles and ball studs. I had some 4.8mm ball studs left over from building something else so that decided the direction for the build. The ball studs were Titanium, why not use them. :mrgreen:

That's a serious problem.
Normally I'd recommend bring this to AE's attention but I fear their only action would be to discontinue the parts. :roll:
I guess it was only a matter of time before metric fasteners would find their way onto our vintage RC10's.

Yes Doug, the thought of AE doing a discontinue of the part was a possibility. Guess we just have to live with it. I'll get some more :roll: fasteners to replace the black FH screw.

I have some more to post but I'm gettin' my grub on right now. :mrgreen:

I got this carbon fiber ESC shelf with Titanium posts from AVID, looked pretty sweet. I've done some figuring and know what all it'll take to make a pair of slick stand offs to mount it on the chassis plate. Hope to get into making them this coming week. They have to have two different thread sizes, a 4-40 screw to come up through the chassis plate and 5-40 on the Ti threaded posts. No worries, got that 5-40 drill and tap set I bought recently. :mrgreen:

The sunlight was streaming into the window by the lathe this morning, no need to let it go to waste. I made the standoffs for the ESC shelf, they turned out extremely nice. I machined four 0.015" wide - 0.024" deep grooves on the end that's threaded 4-40. This will eliminate any confusion as to which end goes down. Hey, I'm getting old, I can use a little help sometimes, some of you know what I mean by that... like, which way is the front on your skivvies. :mrgreen:

Ahhh, but you guys got the parts. I'm at the mercy of eBay and other online venders. :D Just yesterday I was searching for some front axles, #7222. I couldn't find any. I had to settle for #6220B's. I might have to try making my own!I

I may have found some wide axles. Kipp's Hobbies in NY. I dropped some PayPal on them, waiting to see what happens.

Lunsford has titanium wide axles in stock also, I grabbed a couple pair for my rigs. They are labeled for the gt I think
