So I FINALLY got my ESC from the flake of a buyer I bought it form on HobbyTalk (note to self: buy no more used electronics). The new track out here opens this weekend, and the 3.5 week wait I had on the ESC put me really far behind, so it's not going to be ready for the opening race that starts about now.

The new battery mount system is in, and seems to be working very well. I'll post photos of that later this weekend. The tires need to be glued up, but I'm still deciding on dying the wheels all black. Only a few more things to sort through on the car, and it should be ready to go. The ESC will get wired up today, but I'm not sure that I will be running the motor I have now. The track as built is a LOT smaller than I expected, so I don't think the 10.5 will work. I may just dial down the EPA on the motor and run with it as it is, though it will have to be in mod. Most people seem to be gravitating towards 17.5 stock with most classes because of the size of the track.

Anyway, the reason or the post was because I weighed the completed car last night (sans ESC wires), and I was shocked to find out that it came in at 1490 grams, a whole 9 grams under the ROAR 2wd minimum. With the wiring in the car done properly, it should be at or just above the weight minimum. I was shocked. I really thought it was going to be a lead sled, but as it is, it shouldn't be too much at a disadvantage because of the weight. Not too bad.


Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll get a chance to head up to the new track in the next week or two for some practice laps with the new car to get a bit of testing in. Getting closer...

A VERY small track indoors at the newly built Lake in the Hills, Illinois Hobbytown, called TimeWarp Raceway. Here' s a few laps with someone running a short bus... VIDEO.

cool. Thanx for the video and info. You have a race schedule or link? My daughter and I might be heading out for a ride and might try to see some racing.

Been following your build since it is easier for me to get the time to build a new/old build without all the modded parts. Hope yours works out for ya.

Today is the first race day, and I believe they will be doing Wednesday nights and Saturday race days. Classes are typical off road classes, but the general consensus is that 17.5 is all you will need here in just about every chassis.

That is a tiny track, but if you are going to run mod, put at least a 13.5 and you might be able to nail the step up or step down jumps in one shot.

A couple of photos of the wiring and the new battery mount system:








The battery posts are 1" posts from the Associated RC10LR5, but be careful, they are all metric now, so the screws needed are not Imperial from in your tool box. I didn't like the fact that the battery could still move fore-aft and change the weight balance, so I came up with an idea of an eccentric button up front, that would allow some adjustment in the front mount, for different length batteries. I was going to make something up out of nylon or Delrin, but I happened to find this exact piece in the form of a Bell racing helmet tear-off post, so I used that with a small bushing inside of it. It pivots when loosened and can adjust for size up to about .125", give or take.

The ESC that I bought over 3 weeks ago finally arrived in WORSE shape than I had expected, and I can't say I was happy about it. I had to really clean it up, and replace the plugs and switch. The case is a mess, but that isn't seen under everything. I still need a 180mm sensor cable, so it's not 100% complete yet.

cool idea for the battery situation. Once you get the Tekin up and running, you will be pleased! I got one in my Losi Comp Crawler and it works awesome.

Yeah, this is the 4th RSpro I have had. I also use the HotWire to program them. They have performed very well for me, and hopefully the previous owner of this wasn't lying when he told me that it had the old software on it.

oooh, sounds fishy. that would suck to get a bum brushless esc.

Most people aren't happy with the current Tekin software version, and you can't back-date the software on it through Hotwire. I bought this specific one used because it was supposed to still be not updated past v203. I'm crossing my fingers, as I have not hooked it up to the Hotwire just yet.

WHAT STEERING SERVO ARE YOU USING

Futaba s9550. Very popular with the touring car crowd. I have used them for years and they are as strong and as fast as a full size servo. I think with cars like the TLR 22 coming out, you'll see more of them in off road.

Great thread doug, this car is soooo sweet, you have really nailed the whole vintage build.

I'm a Losi guy myself, but I can still appreciate these and it almost makes me want one! , some of the builds on here are very cool indeed.

Good luck with racing at the new track...even if you're not th fastest, you know have one seriously cool ride....
