Here's the DS in race trim. I never thought I'd race it, but it works well on the oval. Basically, it's stock, with TC shocks and Duratrax rims using Custom Works tires on front and Pro-Lines in back. The body is a Mcallister 55 Chevy bomber. It's a little short for the chassis, but it has good clearance, and isn't bulky....They're gonna freak on Saturday

Yes they are. I swapped out the gold top-load shocks with my TC4 because they simply looked better on the car. I wasn't planning on racing the DS, and thought black shocks went with the refinished chassis. I was too lazy to switch them back, but they work, so I'm leaving it alone.

Is that 57 body the one made by Parma several years ago? A friend of mine had one, and I thought it was really well done....I wish they would bring it back.


On a different note: Does anyone know whre I can get the tiny hex wrench used on the idler bearing screws on the 6 gear, or would be willing to sell/lend me one? (I know I'm not "approved", but I'm desperate.)

I believe its a .035" wrench. I don't think I have one but McMaster should carry it.

Yes i believe that was a parma body since the sticker is still on my race box, but i bought it 20 yrs ago.

i was recently in the rc shop near me and i saw a 57 chevy body but it was in pieces that you put together after it was painted, rear bumper body, and front clip

I've seen the 3 piece body before. I don't believe it would make a good bomber body, unless you crashed...then it would look pretty realistic when it comes apart

You should make a street cruiser for your '57. It's way too nice to be a race body.


jwscab - Thanks for the sizing on the wrench. Now I know what to look for.

OK, the latest news on the racing... The DS is as fast as any of them in the bomber class. Most of the time, it hooks up and turns VERY well. The track is hard-packed clay, with very slight banking, and tends to build up rubber as the day goes on. Also, it's warm, with no rain lately. As a result, the bite is incredible. Last week's racing had me hooked up on a rail all day. During the main, it was trying to traction roll in 3 & 4, so I had to baby it...No problem, adjust the line.
This week is where the problems start. It seems like the 1st qualifier picked up where last week's main left off, and it's getting worse. I now have too much bite, and have to fight traction rolls at both ends of the track. I'm using Custom Works 2.0" front and rear, and they're half worn...still too much side-bite in the middle of the corners.

So, with that being said, does anyone recommend a tire with LESS bite for hard pack clay? ...I was debating foams, but I don't really know compounds for the track.

Stiffer RF spring, more tension on the RF collar or a non HB compound CW tire on the RF. The DS is VERY narrow compared to a CE, and only a 4* kickup and or caster vs 30/15

Thanks Charlie...I forgot to mention that I change caster blocks on the car (trimmed and flipped some extra 15* blocks). So I have some added caster on it. Considering how well it turned last week, I just figured the tires were the problem. I'll stiifen the RF and see where it goes.

Well, the project has evolved once again. I've learned a lot since getting back into racing. The days of Nicads, brushed motors and hard pin spikes are far removed from today's equipment. I've finally figured out what setups and tires work, and how to keep it working as the track changes. That being said, here's phase 3 of the ongoing project.

I liked the stability of my 6 gear, but was having a rough time getting it to corner correctly. The DS worked really well on a low to medium bite track, but had a tendency to traction roll on a high bite surface. After getting a feel for how everything reacts, I've decided to bring back the 6 gear with some changes...I swapped the rear bulkhead and shock tower to the short style from the DS, and I'm using the short TC shocks I was running. Also, I reverted back to the original short arms in front. The car is just as fast as before (plus I now have a ton of 6 gear tranny and axle parts for spares), but now it feels more predictable in the corners. I did make one slight shock mod by using .80" shafts in the rear. The stock lengths were just a bit too short. That change makes it sit level, with no excess weight transfer at the corner entrance.

All that's left is drive and adjust for conditions. Also, since I'm never satisfied, I had to add a new body for this version, as well. OK....I'm done, unless I get another wild hair
