I would say as long as you don't use too heavy of a grade sandpaper you'll be allright. I've chucked up hinge pins and axles before in a drill with wet and dry sandpaper. For steel axles I like to use a bit of 3-n-1 oil on the sandpaper, although we're talking fine grade sandpaper keep the part moving and avoid staying in one spot too long. For hinge pins depending how bad they are just a light sand followed by mothers polish makes them look like new.

The good thing about mothers polish is that it has wax in the polish which helps protect parts. I usually wipe the pins down in motor cleaner though as I try to avoid any nylon staining over time from waxes, oils etc.
