It's not quite as short as it looks in the photos, it looks to be somewhere between 9 1/4"- 9 1/2" from spindle to the center of the rear hub. It's about a full inch shorter than my Ultima, yet right about the same as the Tamiya '67 Beetle. It might be close to scale (stock VW) if if a typical Baja Bug body is fitted...

I need something to keep me busy until the Sand Scorcher is released.

If I don't run into any road blocks during assembly, this may be a possible body idea. The wheelbase is nearly perfect. I'm not sure if the fake motor will fit over the Triumph trans though. I may have to check with the local hobby shop and see if a trial fit will verify the look I'm heading towards.

Like I said, I'm trying to build this one with a minimal investment in anything new. I'm not spending significant money on any more RC until I've saved up for the 'Scorcher. I may dip into my RC salvage and sell a few odds & ends to offset any costs.

I suspect the only money spent on this will be on the body & paint.

It may be awhile before it's 100 percent complete.

How about a set of DS bones to narrow up the rear?

I think fastang has alot better idea than trying to shorten up bones. Can say that a few have tried here locally to 'repair' 1/8 scale ofna bones/cvd with absolutely no success...unless its only gonna run with speeds of a radioshack car .

I have lengthen bones before, but not shorten them. I cut the bone in half, used brass tubing that was a snug fit, and 5 minute epoxy inside the tube. Push in the bones set it and forget it. Check them out the next day for tightness. Kinwald does it all the time and run modified rear dog bones on his current cars.

I might try that.

I'm using old Ultima dog bones with a Triumph trans.

I have the Dual Sport bones, but the ends are a little too large to fit in the drive cups.

One thing is for sure, I think I'll omit the rear trailing arm idea and stick with the Ultima stuff..too much work.

Does anyone have an old Cox dune Buggy body in good shape they might want to sell/trade...cheap?

I think if I shorten the chassis just a bit more, I may be able to make one fit.

A 70's dune buggy body might be a neat switch in subjects for a change.

It's (track width) too wide for the Cox Baja Bug body (I've checked), but I think it would be neat to possibly do something similar to this:

as far as shortening the dogbones, a sleeve should work nicely. If you cut the bone to length, but leave a little extra, say .1", then use a dremel to grind half the diameter away on each side, when you put them in the sleeve, they should lock together to provide a more secure link. Use epoxy to hold it all together, or if you wanted to, braze or solder. you might have to final tweak it to straigten it up, but it should be really close.

I actually like the way the front looks on there. Maybe some black paint to help it blend in. You may have already figured this out but I'm pretty sure you're gonna have to cut down the sides of the chassis so you can get your tie rods hooked up. Pretty cool so far.

It looks like the steering is going to have to be fairly simple. I may set it up pan car style, since there isn't much of a way of eliminating bump steer if I used a typical set up anyway.

I plan on cutting the sides of the pan down to resemble a VW pan (and eliminate more holes). The strength in the chassis will be mainly from the Ultima chassis being bonded to the RC10's pan by a combo of sandwiching the front suspension through both parts, screws, and epoxy. I need to buy more cut-off discs for my dremel. I'm suprised how tough it was to cut.

I think painting or polishing (or both) the front end would look great!

I may try that.

I'd still like to narrow the rear suspension just a little more. If I can't move the arms any further, the bones may not be an issue. At the moment it looks like they may work, but just set deeper in the drive cups.

I aquired the SRB front end years ago, I always wanted to be able to use it on something. I just wish I could have wound up with the rest of the car!
