hell yes!! windows is a memory hog, virtual memory burns up spaceon your hard drive, plus temp internet files can overwrite deleted files., continuing to use the comoputer can reduce chances of recovery

Don not run it up at all if you can, and if you are going to run the software yourself, taking the hard drive out and putting it in an external enclosure, about $10, then usb it to desktop, recover from the desktop, least chance of overwriting anything then. I use a couple of programs, have saved the entire contents of a digital camera, that suddenly showed blank, and recovered 1000+ pics from a dead laptop, via this method.

Well my good buddy Al and I spent some time on the phone the next morning and found them and sort of recovered them--She deleted the "my pictures" folder, which I restored but the pathway was not recovered though, so they are here but I can only access them one at a time But I still need to work on it. And no----all I got was "well I didn't know, sorry" and she didn't.

If he still has the same computer he had 8 years ago, he'll need more than file recovery software, methinks...

Lol, this post was before my time but hey since it got bumped...I use a program called GetDataBack and let me tell you- it’s good. Very simple but very powerful. When I recover data for people I just grab everything and put it directly on a drive for them and instruct them to go through it ALONE and weed out what they want, because you will see things you thought were thrown out two ex wives and a couple girlfriends ago.

Been working for disk drive company for 15 years and all advice here is spot on. Turn off pc and remove the drive! Things will get over written even when sitting idle in pc. The drive will perform background media scans and reallocations by itself. Had to recover data many times to fellow co workers and you are correct in saying that stuff will show up that you may not expect!

I have used an old version of File Scavenger for years...as long as the drive is readable (if it ain't, you'll be paying thousands of dollars for a forensic data recovery, almost nobody goes that route), it'll find overwritten data, deleted data and even multiple versions of deleted items/files. I don't need it often, but when I do, it works great.

I had one just recently, my Dads Laptop, even though I had only said 2 weeks previously,

Dad, are you backing up your computer?

So 2 weeks later, I get a frantic phone call, Laptop won't boot, everything's lost!!

No good saying, I told you so! Now Mum's fuming! Dads panicking!

Now I have to try and either get it to boot or recover files, it's now my problem, thanks Dad!

I ended up replacing the Hard Drive with a solid state drive, loaded Win 7 so Dad could get on with his business.

So I was then able to slave the old drive into my computer, I still couldn't read it, bugger!

In desperation in My Computer (Windows), I could see the drive, so I right clicked the drive, then selected Properties

then selected Security and then gave all the users ( Authenticated users/System/Administrator/Users ) full

permissions, ticked all the boxes!

Then selected apply and then exited and then unbelievably the drive became readable, Yes!

Immediately copied the most important folders, Documents and then Pictures to my Hard Drive.

You have to be lucky sometimes!
