Good point on the sanding. I do that as well. The thrust bearing is prone to getting dirt in it fast. Make sure you have the little dirt shield disk installed in the outdrive. It helps some, and then I take a couple of the foam ball link dust shields and place them in there as well. It helps a lot in dusty conditions.

Maybe some help.I can remember BITD, racers using a hand drill chucked with a dogbone to break-in new and rebuilt transmissions. Makes easier than installing and then noticing the problem, IMO.
