I'm verry happy with my creation actually.
I looked for a while to get an optima, but with all I wanted to change to it, it was easier to use the ultima parts.

It hought of using lazer stuff for the suspension initially, who knows which discussions that would have set off

and really, yes, thankyou for the info and pics Terry.
I got another idea now for another one: mix between Nkamura and Mip style conversion!
But eh, don't hold your breath guys: may take a few more years

I plan to use a NIB triumph (seeking cover) or buy a desrt viper kit from Tamiya (don't they sell spare buggy bodies anymore?)
The Triumph fits almost perfect, but if I can sell it, I have enough for the kit

I guess I can wait that long. It will give me a reason to keep coming back to this site. Just kidding guys, there are hundreds of reasons to keep coming back. I love this site. It has helped fuel the passion again.

I can see why, I did a saddle pack chassis conversion for my Optima way back then and it involved using the alloy side plates and trying to attach them to a carbon plate, in the end just screwed it to the underside of the chassis rails and meant the saddle packs were hung outside the rails so didn't improve the handling. Certainly looked nowhere near as neat as this one - it looked the hack job it was.

The Lazer arms would go straight on the front but you would need the Ultima Pro XL rear arm mounts for the narrower pivot points(part no. UM-50). I'm sure it would handle worse and you also couldn't use the low front shock setup.

Bodies for the Desert Gator and Sand Viper should be available, Desert Gator body part number is 1825363, Sand Viper body is 1825429. I know you can buy them over here in the UK so you should be able to order them locally.

I must scan the rest of the magazine. It's Radio Race Car and it has the 87 Worlds report in it.

thanks for giving me a chance to talk RC: I'm getting a bit isolated here in Japan.

It really isn't that much of a big thing here as everyone thinks. (Plus so few RC people speak english here).

You are right on the rear arm mount, I planned to use that. Plus the rear bulkhead with extra holes. But than the lazer arms still interfere with the moterplate.
I was going to dremael a bit of the plate but saw shodog put up some gearbox halves for sale 'for long arms'. Have you ever seen them?
I'd like to know how these are different and if they require another moterplate.

Next project is finish proj04 or maybe a midmoter conversion using an A&L gearbox with hyperdrive spur and pulley. Or maybe the nakamura/mip thing: using a belt on the topshafts of an ultima gearbox in the rear and a maxxum gearbox in the front.

Yes, the gearbox for the long arms is different, part number UM-52 I think. Only difference is that the long arm gearbox has some of the plastic removed to fit between the long arm suspension mounts compared with the standard gearbox, so the standard gearbox just needs some of the plastic cut away to fit.

It does use a different gear cover and motor plate, but not having one to compare I'm not sure of the differences but I suspect it is to bring the motor forward as it is the same shape as the original ones.

Not seen the others before, they were posted before I joined here. They look great, it's good to see proper engineering and unique ideas rather than just throwing loads of hop ups at it. I got into this hobby in the 80s, when you had to modify a kit just to make it last a race, now it's all about spending a fortune on shiny bits of aluminum to just bolt on.

Saw that craze with the T-Maxxs. I ran one stock for a long time with no broken parts but everyone around me was spending crazy money on shiny stuff. Just to bash around the back yard.

Funny part was, most would not run their trucks after the mods. They were afraid to break them

Mmm, no use to buy that other gearbox house without the moterplate and gearcover then.

I'm glad you like the other stuff I made over the years. I've spent 10s or even 100 times more on this part of the hobby then on actual driving, though I allways build to drive. I never built a shelfqueen intentionally.

The modding started as a necessity just like for you (had a boomerang back then which I started putting the bigwig front suspension on), but I soon discovered this is what I like best in the hobby and it is also the part I'm least dependant of clubs, shops etc, so I can do this combined with my busy workschedule.

Time to add some pics with the decaled body.

Will have to make some new ones with the white rims of the first pics.

This would be a really nice looking car out on the track come 'vintage' day. I like the colour combo/style with those yoloow 2.0" rims.

The brand is volks and model.. Ithink was called cyclone. The body was made as a replacement for the tamiya boomerang.
