I bid on that Thorp diff. What do you think - which is the best diff. for the Ultima (the original, the Option House ball, or the Thorp ball)? Are the two ball diff. options that much better than the original?

I had many problems with the diff when I got my ultima pro back in the days... could have been my lack of experience with ball diffs, but I just never managed to set it kind of loose without the setting screw loosening further up during the run. Got a mip (or was it thorp?) diff over year ago but still have to build and try that

Mr. Ed - that's my experience. The ball diffs are hard for me set-up perfectly and such a pain to take off the wheel/tire and adjust. I think I like the stock non-ball one better, but I was wondering if the Thorp one is good or if it has some issues like the Kyosho ball diff.

As I said; I haven't tried the thorp one yet, but the ball diffs that work best for me are the yokomo ones. The screw to adjust the diff on those has a small bend in it which really helps agianst unwanted loosening.
I know you're supposed to use threadlock of medium strength on those screws but with the kyosho design it's though not to get the stuff all mixed with the pressure bearing

Anybody know of any modern wheels that will fit the Ultimas?

come on Mike use the "search", this has been discussed in so many threads already. Any solutions proposed for an ultima will fit the pro.

There are several threads here about adding modern wheels and tires to Ultimas. They vary in degree of difficulty. The easiest is to get the CRP front axles that allow for mounting an older associated type front wheel. Any newer Kyosho hex rears will fit out back. Unfortunately, this means that your front/rear wheels won't match. So, this leads to the more difficult conversions. I have used modern RB5 parts on my Ultima. Other parts that work well too are older Ultima RB type R. Good luck!

Got a bunch done on the Ultima. Shocks have been rebuilt, all bearings cleanded and relubed, diff rebuilt new back wheels and tires, robinson gears and i have new front wheels coming but still need tires. I would settle for some proline 1.9 tires that look similar to the stock mini pins that came with this. Also have a Tekin speedo and a new trininty mod motor. Waiting on black G10 to make the battery straps.
