In all seriousness I don't understand why these guys do it either...then I look at it this way. Its a hobby to them as this place is to me...lookin back and forth across the fence its just as confusing why we do what we do as to why they do what they do. Not saying they are right but half the time I'm not either when I pick up another pile-o-parts that sit around til I get annoyed that I can't find the rest of what I want to finish it up

You hit it dead on! I can look at it that way as well, it may be the "hobby" of choice for some of those guys, and why not. As long as they don't break any laws or harm anyone.

The best part of that comment was picking up parts, that do end up sitting around and now I need to find of them to finish ...how many projects?!

If they are hacking for sport, the difference is that their actions adversely affect someone else (often lots of people) whereas typically our hobby does not. I am assuming you don't take your pile of rc parts to work and leave them on someone's worbench, or lay an electric motor on top of your officemate's hard drive.

I would say the vast majority of hacking is only done for bragging rights, not to steal or get rich. These people hang out in secret IRC chat channels and brag about their exploits, just as a group of punks would after going through a neighborhood slashing every car's tires. It's the hackers' version of "street cred". For most, that's the primary motivation, as twisted as it is. You'll almost never hear or see someone on a public place like this brag or threaten that they're a hacker; real hackers don't advertise their skills so stupidly in public...they do it in more secure "underground" places. Many hackers are actually security consultants for major corporations, using their skills for good, not bad.

Those of us with more socially acceptable endeavors, like building & collecting RC cars, we brag about our exploits on forums like this, showing off our work. I guess that's a more or less valid analogy. Few of us are doing this for financial gain, we only want to share our adventures with a like-minded community.

No doubt, many of them are indeed "s'kiddies" who have no true appreciation of the code programming process, haven't done anything more than use or slightly modify a real hacker's existing tools.

Almost sounds like you are implying that you aren't something that the ones who don't imply they are, aren't.

Not to say that I am implying, that if you were implying that you weren't what you might not be, that I may have to imply that any such implication may be misconstrued.

Nah, I'm no hacker. I know something about it because my best friend when I lived in Montreal could be considered one, and almost nobody knew it. He's one of the good guys, though, and doesn't use his talents to make mischief.

I definitely wouldn't want to mess with him, though.

Either way, you, I, and others wouldn't understand why they do what they do as if to say that they wouldn't understand our wanting to sit and 'play' with old cars...that was my point

I rather enjoyed this one. I know people like that and get ever increasingly tired of family/fried on facebook who post everything and then piss and moan about people finding something out they shouldn't have I know that wasn't really what was implied (Reg will have subconciously have marred me for today with that word now ) there but thanx for letting me slide an facebook bash in there.

Good news so far about this is I haven't read anything bad about what hackers might or might now have done with clodtalk so was pry just one of those things.

A lot of people use the numbers 7410 or 8520 as well because its easy to swipe the numbers straight down.
