What about naming them after hockey players?
Tough rats could be named after Enforcers like Bob Probert
Pretty rats could be named after female hockey players like Manon Rheaume (From Quebec)

I was at work all day, shared some of the ideas via text, thought we were doing sports teams (but not enough 'girly' names) and I returned home to the following:
Girls: Olive, Pasha, Prairie Bee, Uchi, Ramsey, Mattice & Evelyn
Boys: Burt, Charlton & Marten
Mom: Ontario (Tari)
The names have been approved by the rescue group and will be posted for adoption in the next couple weeks.

Thanks everyone, and we'll likely use some of the other suggestions for future foster litters.

Well it's a loose connection, but... The French eat rats (as do many other cultures). So, you could do a French Canadian theme, and name them after French hors d'oeuvres, and deserts (for the ladies) -"Deserats" maybe. -Jeff

I doubt the French from France eat rats, too. That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time!

I watched an episode of Modern Marvels on rats years ago. When we got done watching it my wife said "I know what you're thinking and no we're not getting a rat.".

On that note, Modern Marvels will do an episode on rats, which doesn't even really fit the show, but they won't do an episode on r/c? :? I know because I've contacted them a couple of times... maybe one day.

That's a good idea too; I like it. I'm concerned Grumpy may not be easy to adopt though!

Thumb- my wife wasn't keen on the idea when we got our first two for the kids, but her license plate is now "HUGARAT". They have varied personalities but they are all very friendly and a lot more intelligent than people would think.
Plus they'll groom you:

They showed them doing tricks and jumping from a little diving board into their owner's arms. That was the point at which my wife knew I would want one. We have fish, a frog and a dog already though, so I didn't really push the issue. The fish and the frog are pretty boring though...
