I think it should be 3.2/24 on the last line as the total volume is 24
The formula should be
(%1*v1)/(v1+v2)=%2
where
%1= the initial percentage
%2=final percentage
v1=initial volume
v2=added volume
JK Racing wrote:1 cup = 8 oz
40 % of 8 oz = 3.2 oz antifreeze.
16 oz water + 4.8 oz water = 20.8 oz water to 3.2 oz antifreeze.
so 3.2 / 20.8 = .15 or 15%
I couldnt give you a formula if my life depended on it...been out of school waaayyyy to long for that.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! That's a huge help.
Aconsola - that formula works perfectly!
JK Racing, thanks for the explanation. I was puzzled at first why you converted the cup to ounces, but in scrutinizing your process, it did make it much easier to understand.
Now, if a train leaves New York traveling at 50 mph ...
Thanks again for the help, it's much appreciated.

New equation.
2 cups of 40% antifreeze
2 cups of 50% antifreeze
antifreeze solution is what percent of the total volume?
Using the example from before:
2 cups = 16 ounces @ 50% = 8 oz antifreeze and 8 oz water.
2 cups = 16 ounces @ 40% = 6.4 oz antifreeze and 9.6 oz water.
antifreeze = 14.4, total volume = 32 oz
14.4/32=45%
Correct?

Even if I got the answer wrong (as usual), at least I converted "tech" to "english"...I consistently have to "translate" information from our IT/AS400 team to my VP.

I used to do this in construction. I dealt mostly with women and they, like everyone else not in the trade, were not familiar with general construction terms. I was extremely good at translating back and forth between techno-babble and homeowner-speak.
My sister has to do the same thing with me when it comes to computers. I wouldn't know a scuzzy card from a hard drive gasket.

Her mentioning anything about computers generally evoke my eyes rolling into the back of my head and a sudden loss of consciousness ...
