I said before will say again most machine shops are not hungry enough to do small production runs.100 to 500 parts are what they look for.its ashame cause ee all want parts.chris took orders for his wings only 19 sold so now there won't be any.and that a part that you can shear to size bend drill some holes machine some buttons and package to sell.most aluminum parts you will find are made by people here that love them.now i on the other hand am hungry enough to make and sell the wings.and other parts .i made a few right before chris after seeing one on ebay i still placed a order cause i love chris s parts.was a sad day to hear he won't make them.but 19 wasn't enough to do.1000line program?was that the space shuttles kohootant vavle?lol

metal can be printed, but current cost is probably higher than machining.

The only places that will machine a 1 off part or small run is probably these companies that advertise online specifically doing that. you'll probably pay a premium though.

The metal printing usually doesnt matter for quantity but i would recommend you get a batch of parts when you do it. the metal process is DMLS. The most time consuming part of it when it lays a new layer of powder so the less z axis the better. Since these machines automatically have like a 12x12 minimum size to print on, again try to do as much at once.

Very cool. What CAD program are you using?

I'm using just autocad at moment. This project would probably be much easier with inventor but I dont have that luxury at momnt.

.dwg files is what I can use.

I'm also using this project to help teach myself more about materials and the rendering stuff in autocad. Which also means I'm going to have to learn to create a material b/c the color of AE's anodizing isnt near to any selection I have.

I'm not familiar with the use of autocad. Aren't DWG files just drawing files and not solid models? I don't know. I mean, what is the file extension when you create a full 3d model in autocad? Here is one in the DWG format. let me know how and if it works.

.dwg is autocad's main file type. It can include 3d models as well as 2d drawings. It can keep different types of data in the same file.. Its all based on how the the software handles modeling.

ex. autodesk inventor uses the file type

.idw for 2d drawings only, you can see a 3d part but cannot modify it.

ipt for 3d models, Its only 1 part per file but allows everything to stay aligned in the xyz planes.

.iam for 3d assemblies, You can see 3d parts and move them around so that they interact with each other properly.

Its all just different data types for each file type.

also. that dwg file you sent was only 2d data.

checking online, i might be able to use your files you found but ill have to do some testing.

Edit: not gonna work. oh well, im gonna go on a modeling binge of parts this weekend and see if i can get most of the car finished up.

just thought id post an observation im having with the shock towers. Depending on how your connecting your shock and turnbuckls. you really dont need to have threaded holes. If your not using the ball end screws, its note needed.

I question of whether which method works better. At moment im not going super detailed with threaded portions of parts until I can get an accurate section of the screws and holes needed for the 8-32 and 4-40 thread pattern.

Ya threaded holes in 3/32" material is not that useful.at best your going to get what like 3 turns ( 3.75 threads in 4-40). Better it be backed up with a lock nut.

another odd observation. On the top of the front bulkheads, There is a 4-40 hole with small fins and a grove around it. Any ideas what mounted there?

regretting not having a fully assembled car with me while not modelling, while I can see all the parts together, I cant see all the screws and such to get proper spacing
