What's rcmt?
B, that car looks like testosterone on wheels.
J, I'm probably going a similar route: pick-up cab without bed.
The questions I had were about an hbx model with 360 motor. I ended up picking another car as a base for a crawler conversion though. I hope I made the right choice. Both cars are new on the market so it's a bit of a gamble.

RCMT, good luck there. RCCrawler.com is truly the best crawler forum out there. You should find what you are looking for there.

The HBX crawler is basically one step up from a New bright toy. I'm not sure how much aftermarket support is out there for them. The Losi Mini Crawler/Vaterra Slick rock 1/18th scale is a much better option if you want to keep it small. Losi also has a Micro crawler in 1/24th scale as well.

If you are looking for 1/10 scale Axial SCX or Wraith axles are the way to go.

So what model did you pick?

^2.2's cut and shut to 1.9's.

ed, yeah i hate to say but those lower tier crawlers arent really given much love over at rcc.

are you going for a purpose built crawler or more of a scale rig like weve posted here?

The hbx I was looking at is a different model: hbx 16885. Basically it is a 1/16 monster truck with 4 link suspension in the front and back. It comes with nice shocks and metal links for the suspension and steering. Bearings are included and the transmission has metal gears I was told later. It has good potential for a crawler conversion but there's not much choice for crawler motors in the 390 size. The wheels are running on 12mm hexes, but the included wheels and tires are useless for crawling. So, while cheap, and easy to upgrade, the needed upgrades would drive the final cost up immediately.

The car I picked instead is Wltoys 12428. A 1/12 rockracer with 4link suspension in the back and cantilevered independent front suspension up front. The total package was a little lighter which allowed cheaper shipping and it has the right wheels and tires as well as a 540 sized motor. I hope this will give me some better idea about the whole crawler experience.
If I really like it a lot I may still buy a big brand later.

The style I want is scalish proportions but not just a roadtruck with raised suspension. To realize that look I want to use my old hirobo 44b toyota hilux body crafted over the rockracer cage.
It kind of seems the crawler scene has a strange duality. On the one hand it seems to hold strong on its diy mentallity origin. Yet on the other hand, there are shitloads of extremely expensive billet parts and kits.

I just looked at the pictures of it on RCGroups, it looks very familiar and should work for your build idea. My guess is that is a is a clone of the Vaterra Twin Hammers rock racer with subtle changes to it.

That's right, except it's 1/12 and the TH is 1/10.
That said, my hilux body is 1/10 too but lots smaller than any 1/10 scaler body I saw in the lhs.
