That is my stance as well.

For the same reason one uses smilies on a forum, others can only read your words, they are not privy to the inflection or tone of your voice, body language, or general way of being. Smilies help to convey that in writing.

Is it racist to call them smilies, what they were originally called, or the more PC norm of emojis? :?: :mrgreen: :lol: :roll:
