With a chassis that nice I’d hold out for some nice Andy’s or RPM Arms instead of going with the stock arms

The Rogue element gear case are beautiful as a piece of jewelry

Wheres the 'LIke' button at....

This will make a decent runner I suppose, and the body will cover the hideous chrome and graphite parts

I was told by FL that I got one of the last tubs they were ever going to do and that was about 5 yrs ago. The quality of my tub was complete junk compared to that beauty. I was so disappointed with the quality and appearance of it I never built it and sold it. I guess they just dont make em like they used to!!!

@Limestang, Yes, that FL chassis is actually looking about "right", I had heard some not so flattering stories about the later ones. Sorry to hear yours is in this category

@Shodog, Andy's arms is a good idea... I might even have some black ones... will have to check (one more motivation to pull out the box-o-suspension parts!)

Project is stalled for now as I'm waiting for some parts to show up in the mail

The parts gathering continues....

While some parts are getting the peroxyde treatment before the dye, I dug further into the parts box, looking for andy's arms.

And I found some rears and other tidbits I would not use this time anyway:
Unfortunately, no matter how deep I dug, no fronts to be seen... I have some white fronts, but, c'mon, not gonna dye these

I did find a set of parts i had totally forgotten about, though I certainly won't use them for this build but hey I feel good having them in the stash
Net - I either find a set of Andy's fronts (going to the BST section now) or this will receive team car RPM or stock AE worlds black arms.
... which also show I have pretty much all needed black parts to start that build anyway (who cares if I run 1.5deg or 3deg rear toe).

Still waiting on a couple of other tidbits and we shall get started sometime in march

It's on...

It took a few years to get this one rolling as you understood... but I'm on it now, and it's already making progress. More progress in a week than over the past decade to be honest - at least this lockdown will have been useful to something.

I realized this is actually the first RC10 that I build from (mostly) new parts. I've restored a few RC10/T's but never had I been lucky enough to build one "from scratch". As I open parts bag after parts bag, it's quite an amazing feeling, really! I guess the next step is to start building NIB's that I've accumulated over the past 20+yrs but I'm not quite ready yet

anyway... the build starts with the transmission. The diff is the first focus here.



Obviously, the highlight is @mk-Zero 's sublime outdrives.



the pic is out of focus (didn't see it on my phone ) but the parts are PERFECT. The finish is outstanding... and the lightness. Pure bliss!

To build a diff properly, I always try to use my muchmore diff jig, it's simple but smartly thought out, both for holding parts together during the build but also to check for slippage. Still I don't regret not running ball diffs anymore... gear diffs have made our lives simpler, even though they came out of the necessity to remove the maintenance from the crazy torque of modern BL's. Before that, no-one ever cared about them because they are a bit harder to drive for real. Anyways...



Once done, the diff looks like modern art!

Then it was time to move to the rest of transmission.

One of the cornerstones of that project is @toyranosaur 's alloy case, that I picked up a couple of years ago which is nothing short of stunning - like pretty much all of what Chris does:







It still needs a bit of deburring though so the seal line is about invisible, but not much. The machining is that good.


The case needs to be heated so the bearings can be fitted. I figured out 200degC was as good as it gets:



Then they drop just right in... and as the case cools down, they just seem to make one with the case. It's ridiculously awesome





A (used but it good shape) top shaft was cleaned up, and a burr had to be filed off so the old bearing could be removed.



Then the shaft was polished, an idler gear added, the plug was screwd in from inside, and everything assembled and closed.





The next step was to tap @GoMachV 's wonderful CWF plate - fortunately thanks to my previous B1M ventures (more of @mk-Zero 's work here!) I had the right 4-40 tap, which is pretty unusual in Europe.



the spacers are supplied by REC (more on the topic later)

Then both parts get bolted on together thanks to the screws supplied by REC, too.

I am still unclear on who makes those amazing aluminum outdrives? I would love to get a pair if possible.
