They came as a set : option parts by cross for tamiya F1 I think.

Did you notice the pair on the sides of the cage have a little piece of lexxan under them?
That's because those 2 are held by a small bodyclip on the bottom side. The lexan plus 3mm turbo chassis hold them just firm enough pointed up to put the body on, but once the upper bodyclips are attached everything is pulled together pretty tight. I hate floppping bodies 8)
The posts sit in the original topdeck-to-chassis mount holes; only had to enlarge them about 1-2 mm. It's a wonder how these holes ligned up both front-to-back and sideways with the molded in lightposts of the body. I was scared at first I'd have to buy another tamiya three to get the lights only

Nice body choice.

By putting the balls on the underside of the knuckles causing steep steering rods are you intentionally courting bump steer ?

(PS would love to see a photo of the front depressed/down to see if my mental steering geometry is correct)..theoretically I think it will be crazy :)

Thankyou.

I really liked the look of this car but wanted to put it on a heavier track and the ultimas slipper-less gearcase was not going to be enough to handle the abuse.

So the body and cage ended up on this; my yokomo twin-star:

I think I can make this body and cage work on other cars too. I would love to do this with an optima for example, but don't have one

The steering rods were actually parrallel to the lower arm : the balls were on the bottom side at the center too. I did not like the wide steering assembly much though and changed it to a single arm setup later. (No pictures and I never ran it in that version).
The problem with the wide setup was not the bumpsteer; there was none. But the way the wheels turned was quirky: the inside wheel would turn alot while the outside wheel moved barely. and with the wheels turned each side also acted very different on compression of the suspension.

How did I miss this?

(I saw it on another posting & followed the link.)

This thing is really cool, I had to do a double take when I saw the photos.

I've been into Ultimas for a couple decades, & didn't even realize that's what it was!

I couldn't figure out what a Tamiya was doing in the Kyosho column..untill I saw the lower front arm..

Well done! :D

Well, how should I know?

The body is now kind of ruined (had it on another build for a 2 days race) but I recently found the rollcage fits perfectly on the original ultima body too... so maybe there will be a'return of the kyosho hotshot' some day

That is a cool mix-up, I also had to take a second look to tell it apart from the Tamiya variant lol. Nice job

Great build.

I love the double-take of having a highly characteristic and recognizable body and set of wheels/tires on a totally different chassis.

I am presently assembling parts to make a Losi JRXT / LXT Tamiya Monster Beetle doppleganger,, tractor-spike tires and all. I guess it would be a "Team Losi Monster Beetle" by your nomenclature.

Thank goodness for repro bodies!

I too saw this just now. Great job! The HotShot body makes the Ultima look a lot more aggressive.

LOL This is turning into my most popular build sofar... even though it's been dead and taken apart for a year
I reallly should get my hands on rebuilding something along the same lines.

When the boomerang got released I wanted to do a boom'ing ultima : combining my first 2 cars seemed fun and the boomer body is a thing of beauty. Bad timing and the lack of distribution for re-re parts in the shops here pushed the idea back. What do you guys think: do or don't?

Do it, and call it the Ultimerang.
