(what's up with the splice on the battery + wire? Was there some kind of external fuse on the "4"?

Paul
Hey Paul, yes these early Novak ESC had no built in shortcut protection system and it was recommended to install a blade type fuse, typically used in 1/1 cars, to avoid any unwanted damage. These early ESC were costing as much as a kit back then

Thanks for the continuous education... I had never realized that... Will need to reopen my box-of-old-hoarded-speedoes to check if any of them has something similar!

Yup it was very common BITD to use these fuses. I think Futaba even made an ESC that included a specific slot for such a fuse. Maybe the 210CB?
Here is a picture of the very first NOVAK ESC (used on the RC10 box art). Note that there are only 3 wires instead of four, large on/off switch, 3 pots, machined heat sinks and no screws to attach the two half cases, just a black tape like for the NER-2S receiver! It was never described or pictured in their official online timeline though.

And here is a Novak 1 ESC without the label and was most probably produced just after the one above.

Et voilà! Stole the body from a car I would like to sell and added Autographics numbers. Paint scheme inspired from the Winning Edge RC10 video. I need to track old white AE logos to finish it off. A yellow Sanyo pack would be great too.

Everything turned out great! Body and the wheels go together great, and I love a clean wiring job! 8)

Very sweet paint job, with extra shading on the blue translucent paint... lovely final result - as expected!

Thanks for taking the time to write something guys. She’s a keeper for sure. The more modern Autographics decals bug me terribly though
