I submerge as much as possible and spash it on as much as my time permits. I have a small brush with firm plastic bristles that works great. dont use steel wire brush.

Try some fine polish for cars, even stuff like mothers cleaner wax that has some fine grit in there.A clean old towel or rag, even old socks the bottom part works great, rub carefully and do a small area at a time.It should do the trick, save those torn socks for the small jobs :)
