Can you explain? What does that do for me? Where do I get wheels and tires?

By replacing the bearings with either 4x11x4 or 4x10x4 You get multiple options when it comes to front wheels, crp, tamiya, traxxas and so on - But not the original Ultima rims.

Where You buy 2wd buggy 1/10 front wheels? Ebay or internet hobby stores, would be my suggestion ;-)

Very helpful - THANKS! I think I'm going to get the Tamiya Astral Dish wheels and get bearings for them (4x11):

And these tires:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/322244959023

I don't see foam in these tires, do they need to have foam in them? Do I purchase that separately? Do you still glue the tires to the wheels or have they come up with something better?

Any suggestions for better looking wheels? These I found quickly and they're pretty reasonably priced, but I'm open for suggestions.

How do I know if I need 4x11 or 4x10 bearings? and how many?

Woah, I just found these...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-RC-CRP-FRONT-TAMIYA-WHEELS-TO-TURBO-ULTIMA-STEEL-AXLES-1712-/371556446326?hash=item56827d7076:g:CAcAAOSwKtVWxPY3

So that allows me to use 5x11x4mm bearings? What's the difference? I'll have to buy bearings either way right, so does it matter??

If I get the 5mm axle, then I can run these hex adapters:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/RPM-12mm-Hex-Wheel-Adapter-for-Tamiya-Blackfoot-Hornet-Kyosho-Ultima-RC10-FX10-/272368774796?hash=item3f6a71ae8c:g:-ooAAOSwFnFWDtD-

That opens up all kinds of options right? Would the front be too wide then?

Sorry - I have another question. Does anyone around here paint and decal bodies? I know I don't have the skills and I want a box look body made.

Thanks

Hello, I cannot help. But as I see it, for some questions, you should try questionning your local shops. That's what I would do ( and did...) to get more concrete and local solutions.

Glad to see you are on top of it. :)

No.

You would be able to use 4WD front wheels, but combined with the extra width of the adapters it might make the front much wider and look strange unless you use offset wheels.

Tamiya 2WD front wheels usually used 11 mm outer diameter bearings. You'd need four of them.

I started to pull the trigger on buying stuff today online and I'm already over $200 in parts and gear. I still need small parts too like the UM1 gear and pinion gear, plus who knows what else (shock rebuild?)... Now I'm second guessing whether or not I want to do this.

Sometimes it's worth to check whether you can use more modern parts because the parts may actually be the same ones as the old ones, just in different packaging. E.g. Kyosho's turnbuckles were also used in newer cars, and the newly labeled parts are much cheaper than the vintage parts, even though the actual parts use exactly the same design.

Some Ebay sellers of vintage parts are also extremely overpriced, so it might be worth it to wait a little bit for a better deal. If you're not adverse to ordering from outside the USA, there are international sellers that have lots of cheap parts (use Ebay's advanced search option to find such parts).

I agree, but I'm just not quite at the point where I know enough to cross-reference parts... But I need a UM-1 gear and the pinion gear. Back in the day, I put some kind of grease on them and it literally melted them smooth... oops  That's what ultimately put my car on the shelf long term...

but yeah, that "VINTAGE" UM-1 is going for like $40 on eBay. ugh...

Or you just ask on here before buying. :D

Someone on here may have that part for less (you've got 6 posts to go for Buy/Sell/Trade access :) ) or might be able to chime in whether it's possible to use parts for the Optima reissue.

Even that gives me a place to start looking - I didn't know the Optima reissue was close maybe...

** WTB UM-1 **

Which gear(s) do you need specifically? Only the one which meshes with the pinion on the motor? Or everything in the UM-1 package?
