Some pics of the front end on my first attempt.

Added a Hydra Drive unit

I had to countersink the mounting holes on the front tower, as otherwise the dogbone pins would hit the screw head. There is very little space up front to make everything work smoothly. I also added my first attempt at a front belt roller to pick up some slack in the longer belt needed for this build.

Modified the front belt roller with two pairs of 3x10 flanged bearings, using a Yokomo 870C roller assembly. This works much better than the first attempt. The belt does not run perfectly straight, but it's really a tradeoff between that and making sure the steering rack clears the roller throughout the full steering throw. Some compromise is needed here.

Rear hub carriers are from a Kyosho RB5. I had thought about using aluminum carriers for the bling factor, but I wanted to use the same AE TiN coated ballstuds throughout, and those would not work on a metric hub carrier (needed for the metric universals, to fit the YZ10 wheel hubs), since the threading is different. At least with the molded unit, the 4-40 thread will self-tap into the plastic. 870C universals used in the rear. Front universals are YZ10 Works front units. The front track width appears a bit wider than the rear. I may be able to address that with different wheel offsets. We'll have to see how that turns out.

I'm waiting on a few parts to arrive before I put the shocks together (big bores) and mount some other bits (battery tray, antenna mount, etc.).

I would be REALLY worried about chewing up teeth on that 2nd tensioner on the front. Maybe see if you could find a small spur or something to put in if you HAVE to get more tension, but harmonics and heat might kill that belt.

Just thinking out loud (via keyboard, obviously...it would be weird to talk to the computer screen.)

Yes, I have thought about that. Since this is a shelfer, it's not a big deal, but it would be nice to put a tensioner together that would work better in theory. I thought about modifying an SC10 4x4 pulley to replace the bearing "rollers," or maybe even some kind of clicker unit (perhaps also from the SC10 4x4, since the front "diff" is really just two one-way bearings and so it would be nice to have some adjustability on the one-way action). For the time being, I am leaving it as-is, since I would like to think that the bearings are a smooth enough surface that they won't chew up or significantly distort the belt teeth if the belt was run under tension. If I end up figuring out a better solution that would also fit, then I'll surely get to work on that.

Tires, electronics, and wing are installed. I'm using Yokomo TF-390 and TR-39 tires, which I figured would be appropriate for the Yokomo wheels. I have several of the TR-39 tires, but the TF-390s are quite hard to find. The pink wing was mana from heaven. I was originally planning on a painted lexan wing, but this wing showed up (NIP), and it was too perfect for this build to pass up.

The electronics were tricky, and it all comes down to the belt. I didn't feel like finding a shorter belt to pull the bottom of the belt up, and I figured it would be more fun to figure out a different electronics configuration to fit around the belt anyway. The servo had to go towards the middle, which meant even a shorty pack would not fit. That meant using saddles, which happen to fit perfectly here. I used B44.1 lipo trays to hold them in place and mounted the receiver and ESC straight down the middle. All that's left (other than the body) is to try and perfect the tensioner. The little nut that holds the two 3x10mm flanged bearings on up front is only barely threaded onto the screw, and this results in some clearance problems with the steering rack ball cup. I looked around a bit, and it turns out that a SC10 4x4 belt roller would be a suitable replacement for those two bearings. It has an offset housing that mounts one bearing, which should give me enough space to properly thread the gold nut in and make more clearance room for the steering rack. Parts are in the mail and I'll be test fitting it soon. Hopefully it works.

I plan to focus on the SP-2 build next. I plan to keep that one a bit more conventional, but there are still a few goodies I have that I want to put on it (clear HG shocks, etc.).
