Just got done with a tear down and cleaning / replacing worn parts. Just need to get the electronics back in, and it's dirt time.
It's got an LRP IPC 7.1 ESC, and this time for the motor, I think I'm going to try out a Trinity D4 11/2 that I've got. Of course, updated to 2.4GHz receiver, so I don't have to mess with crystals...

It may be newly minted, but it's 90% used parts, and will be my new outside basher car. Most of my others have become too nice to run outdoors, IE: Beautifull B4, new B5M, and heavily modified Slash 4x4 for racing, along with a vintage 80's Ultima, and various vintage RC10's.





Since I know the question is going to come up, the plastic triangles on the sides act as nerf-bars, to protect the rear suspension. They are indeed vintage, probably late 80's when everyone was using this kind of plastic for bumpers. Especially when you run truck long arms, you need something like these. On my other RC10T that I do run at the local clay track, I can't tell you how many times I've broken rear a-arm hinge pin holders. I'd put them on that car, but I don't want to add more weight

I'm lovin these runners. Here's my one runner, that's never been raced that is.

So.... you know what its like as you browse eBay. You see something and a plan hatches.
This time it was a lonesome lightened A-stamp pan, cleverly cut to provide a shorter wheelbase option.
Next it was a Houge steering set complete with turnbuckles, arm mounts, hubs, axles wheel-nuts and bearings. A quick addition of a set of new RPM front arms, some vintage pins and the front end is up and running. (The B5 shocks and multi-hole tower came from the spares bin - You know how it is)
This one will be the speed demon with a lipo/brushless system I have currently installed but not run in my pretty re-re Classic shelfie.
I have wheels and a 6-gear transmission so just waiting for for some back end parts to appear or be bought.
So that's three in the garage now

man thats sweet looks like a proper vintage racer from back in the day. nice!

Did some more work on the lightened special: Added the steering servo at an angle to give more space for the lipo battery in its cut-down battery box in the shorter chassis and positioned an Absima ESC and receiver.
In sorting out the steering had to drill new positions for the upper front turnbuckle ball on the shock tower so give clearance for the Houge steering connections on full lock.
Also gave a vintage 6-gear transmission a strip and check over before attaching.

Finally got the rear end sorted only to find my lipo won't quite fit. A quick fiddle around and a couple of new holes for the battery box has me now working a diagonal theme.
First run out found it very quick off the throttle, enough to wheelie on the shorter wheelbase. all went well until a glancing blow with a kerb at speed broke one of the steering arms. As I suspected it was a dyed black vintage part, but my box of spares provided a good condition replacement for the next run.
Pretty happy so far.

Those are some gnarly looking rear tires, what are they?

Had plenty of RC10's over the years, and have never seen a diagonal battery layout until now. Seems to work ok though. With shorty batteries it's not necessarily a need, but with full size packs I can see it as a solution to servo placement.

The only minor issue I had with the servo position was the servo arm ball mount fouling the end of the adjacent nose tube. Because of the modified nose plate position (about 14mm shorter on the wheelbase) the nose tubes extend further back into the pan, but as there is plenty of spare length doing nothing I just cut one short.
You can see in the pictures the shorter tube and the difference between the original side fixing hole and the new.

I had a good rough session on tarmac with it with a fair few collisions, rolls and flips, largely down to the rather too-good traction from the modern tyres. (I really need something that slides a bit better for a bit of drift action.) Nothing further broke, but once back on the bench I could see the lightened pan had deformed a little inboard from the suspension mount points and it was obvious that the lightening process had weakened the pan integrity somewhat.
