I know we're supposed to speak English here, but it's "faux pas". Sorry, that was driving me crazy.

Ok, I have to admit that was bugging me too. For some reason it's like the visual equivalent of fingernails on a chalkboard. Here's another one: I can't tell y'all how many times I've seen "wallah" for "voila". This is nuts, I don't even speak Korean. :)

this is PhoneticsTalk.com  , anyone needs some French lessons? Really amazing how many French words English people use everyday, can you name them all (maybe in a dedicated thread)? Actually, after the Normans invaded England, they left the English people with a ton of Latin vocabulary, and nowadays (even if you don't realise it) English is made of about 60% of Latin/French based words, believe it or not

I don't believe it!

I've heard that English is the hardest language to learn because it is derived from so many different languages. I wouldn't know, I grew up mangling, er .. uh ... speaking it.

It's even worse when you are a malapropophile (can I say that here, or is this a don't ask, don't tell website?).

The word malapropos (or maloprop ), meaning "inappropriate" or "inappropriately", derived from the French phrase mal à propos (literally "ill suited to the purpose"). It's where you replace the correct word in a phrase with another that sounds similar but has a totally different meaning.

A good example is: richierich is effluent in French, but not Korean.

I'm sure that malaprops are common there in Germany, you're just not familiar with them. No biggie. 8)

Just ask erich or tad to translate, they're both confluence in several languages.
