I have a quick repro question...

On a body mold do you have to drill tiny holes in the mold to allow proper forming as you would complex small pieces? Or are they not that detailed?

typically not that detailed... i knowthe body molds i've seen of Protoforms don't have them, those are more to get the pulled piece to release around wierd shapes and such if i'm not mistaken. I don't know for fact though... this place is doing the mold and the forming for me

Its not plaster, they'll be commercial resin molds

Yes, every body needs vents adding to let the air escape. Every groove, such as the window markings, need holes to get the air out of it and any internal radius, such as where the sidepods on an RC10 shell join the body. These holes ideally need to be no bigger than 1mm in diameter, ideally smaller if it can vent properly. Anything bigger than 1mm will show up as a dimple on the surface. You'll find out when you try vacforming a mould, you'll find you have to keep adding holes to get it to pull down properly.

The difference is Erich is planning on making bodies for sale, which requires a stable pattern that will last for many pulls without breaking down. Even the hardest plaster isn't going to last for dozens of pulls without damage, never mind hundreds. Tooling resin also does not shrink at all when you make a mould with it, unlike most plasters, silicones and resins which have an amount of shrinkage as they harden. This is why some of Kamtecs repro bodies are a bit smaller than the originals, in the case of his optima body it's about 10mm shorter later bodies he uses more appropriate materials. The disadvantage of tooling resins is the price. Having a trade account means I can order it, but here in the UK enough to fill one buggy body would cost me £70/$140 , double that for a touring car size mould. BTW you can't use cheaper casting resins as they have a lower melting point than the polycarbonate.

Thanks for more forming info guys, I am currently doing some slow online research for it. I have no idea how I'd drill 1mm holes in my 1/8th body mold though, maybe make it hollow.Hmmmmm

It's actually a Kinwald/CR style shell not the original XX. i was planning on putting it on my RPM moulded car, Anyway, when I went down to see the guy, it figures he had these too: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270211486633

The Turbo Mirage is as new, painted really nicely. Needless to say. I made a very reasonable cash offer for the three shells and now they are sitting on my cars!
