The shock absorbers I have seen are all Schumacher Cat but they just look
slightly different. They might just have been from different batches.

Yea, the shock colour did vary a bit over time.

I'm not sure about the first of the SWB's, but the earlier shocks up to the XLS were just a plain aluminium. The procat ones were anodised, have a slight brownish finish, and are shinier.

I've got 4 sets on different cars, and a heap of bare shock bodies in a box somewhere.

Essentially the shocks from the SWB to the procat were the same. The lower seals went through a few changes to make them smoother and leak less. Also they went from a straight O-ring top seal to a diaphragm on the later ones to reduce oil frothing, and to take into account the shock shaft displacement through the shocks travel.

Having bought out the previous Australian importer of all his Schumacher stock and sold on many new sets i would say that the earlier type bodies were more like a polished alloy finish. I have since bought 3 CAT's and these have had a different finish on a few of them. I also bought an Aussie team drivers collection and found all kinds of stuff in that lot. Ive cleaned up some of these shock bodies and some polish up to a brilliant shine where as other dont polish at all. These ones tend to have been coated or something. They seem more like a deep steel colour. Weird I know. So there definately are different coloured bodies. I even have some black medium length bodies too. They look OEM.
I have built up and run one of my CAT's with a slipper and the Procat diffs. The old chrome rims spinning and the full spike cat tyres look awesome in action. Im still yet to paint the repro CAT body Keith sent me. Im considering running this car at the Ryde/Sydney annual vintage meet on the 22nd of June.
