At the risk of ME asking an obvious, is the Lathe Motor turning in the correct direction. We've "forgotten" to check that (more likely, just flaked on it ), and it "smoothes" it out, but looks "rough" as you say.

With Motor tunring in the right direction, and a reasonably sharp Carbide Bit, we very smooth cuts.

Just a thought I didnt see mentioned.

Also is the bit pointing in the right direction?

With carbide bits they last approximately 30-40 cuts before they start to loose their edge. Misuse them prob about halve that figure again.

Oh no you didn't I know I suck at comm cutting, but I know for a fact that the motor is spinning in the right direction geez give me some credit

Just goofing, yep the motor is spinning in the right direction sir.

I think my mistake was more of not using the cutting fluid.

I power the lathe motor with my LRP charger.

I'll take a pic tomorrow of the lathe with the cutting bit mounted on there.

Also, have the Bit stick out of its mount as little as possible. To far out and it will cause chatter that will make it look rough. But that usually causes some whinning/whistling, that you didnt mention, so its probably not a prob either.

Just another thought.

Hmmm...after having abit of a look at the lathe you are using,

Which way does the rotor spin if the cutter is pointing away from you?

Judging by the pic it would suggest the rotor spins away from you? am I right?

the rotor rotates away from me if I stand behind where the wheels are.

Ok Just as I thought...your lathe cuts on the upward rotation much like other brands....your cutter should face downwards (opposite to a full size lathe).
Set the cutter 90 degrees to the rotor and allow about 0.5 mm above the centre of the comm...you should be good to go.

Oh nearly forgot...check the squareness of the lathe as well (using a set square) as a precaution

Good thing we can always come back to these post for reference, cause I'd be going crazy trying to remember all this good advise. I'm gonna order some cutting fluid and a new blade just in case, and get some practice in, I might be able to salvage some of the vintage Mod motors that I got just laying around.

I have a 10T double Cobalt that I haven't used cause I'm afraid of cutting the comm.

ahh... the cobolts....

is it one of the ones with the blue heatsink on the end bell ? if so that would be a great coom to leern on, as its got alot of meat on it.

Ok got it all figured out, I bought the cutting fluid and a new blade, and voila, shiny new Comms!!!! yay!!!

Now I feel a little more confident about running the brushed motor.
