That makes better sense. I thought I was missing out on some trick to get these old tires to work. Drifting with jumps sounds fun. I'm racing astroturf off road right now which is opposite. Unlimited grip set your ride height as low as you can go yet with big jumps.

From what I hear, no, there is no traction. It's more or less a drift competition with jumps.
But, you can run some old 2wd Tamiya car in the Classic class hopped up to the max and run modern rubber.
Very true, but based on running this event the last 3 years, I can tell you the 2WD RC10s/JRX2s are always in the hunt in classic class so it's not a big advantage either way. The stock tires offer less traction but the cars are 2WD (less drag), run championship-proven chassis, etc, and are lighter and therefore (theoretically) faster in a straignt line than a 4WD plastic fantastic car they run against in same class which is supposedly the reason they are allowed to run together.

i hope this isnt too sensitive of a question, would black tub GT's converted to electric, be considered to run? also wondering if any issues running a modern body like a jconcepts finisher, or a t4 body on my T2

Looks like Cliff Lett will be back this year for another q&a on Saturday after the first day of racing.

That's sweet!
I'm trying to get my crap together. I just ordered another ESC/motor, transponder and servos for my Worlds SSC10 and the 10T I hope to run. I don't have a car for Saturday right now, but was looking at used Tamiya in the LHS that was ready to run...

You can run a converted gt's in stadium truck, but it must be a tub chassis. T4 body on your t2 would be fine.

The SSC10 is mid-motor, right? Is that one allowed at vonats?

Nope, it's a rear-motor direct replacement chassis (mostly).
Check out my SSC10 build here...

I keep wanting to make the long journey there one day. Is there a place for a club level hack, seems most of you guys that show up are top level drivers past or present. I guess the classic and wheelie class would be a good equalizer. I am no fool though and Cliff Lett would be aggravated by me being in the way if he was driving a Wild Willy and I had a wonder buggy.

I have run 3 off-road races in my life.
Cliff won't be racing either. Just there for a q&a Saturday night.

I suck. Haven't raced competitively in like 20 years when the cars were actually current. Lol. I just the clock.

Oh perfect, I'll fit in, I get to two to three "real races" a year and just a mid pack guy who's there for fun. My weekly racing days stopped in 1992. I spend a lot of time doing practice laps at track though as it fits my schedule better than the race schedule. Surgery this year but I am in for 2018.

The guys there do a great job. It's a good track inside and outside. Crawler tracks inside and out plus a carpet track. Good hobby shop with helpful staff. They hold some pretty big races.

There were no off-road tracks in my area when i got into racing in '91. This was dirt oval country, so that's what I raced weekly until around 2002. I've only run a couple of oval races since then (once in '04, and 2-3 times in '07) Also 1/10 oval pan car, and a little bit of 1/12th on-road and touring car in the late 90's-early 2000's. Mostly club races, but I have run a couple bigger races.
I ran an off-road race once back in..... '92 maybe? Then nothing until the first Vonats in '08. Was unable to make it back there again to race until '15. My wife had back surgery around the race last year so i couldn't make it. So this year will be my 3rd race in the last 10 years...... period. No ovals, no on-road, nothing. Although, it doesn't take me to long to get back into the swing of things, and if were the Vintage Dirt Oval Nationals, I would probably expect to do fairly well. Being off-road, mid pack in the B is about my level. Finished 3rd in the B in '08, and i had a podium run going in '15. But, the steering ball cup popped off the knuckle with a minute to go and lost a couple spots dropping to 5th (i think).
